Preparing to move to Zurich

Hello everyone,

Me and my husband are planning to move to Zurich in April 2020. We are both 25 years old. I am originally from China. I went to the US when I was 17 years old. I completed my Bachelor(Civil Engineering) and Master degrees (Transportation engineering) in the US. My husband is from a EU country. We met in college, dated for 5 years and got married this year. He works in the IT industry.

2020 is a special year. We realized that we want to be close to at least one side of family, so that we have more time to stay with our family. If we stay in the US, within the little vacation time in the US, we can never spend enough time with our parents. My husband visited Switzerland few years ago, he loved it. I never been to Switzerland, but I only hear good things about this country. Anyway, we decided to move to Switzerland.

We know that moving to a foreign country is not easy, but we are ready for the new challenge. I started learning German ever since we made the decision, because I know the language is important for me to start my career in Switzerland. I hope I will be able to speak more German when we arrive in Zurich. I really enjoy reading in Englishforum. You guys provided so much useful information. I am excited for the move and hoping to join some events with you in the future. Wish everyone Merry Christmas!

Welcome, hope you have a good time. It is a strange country, but fundamentally a good one if you like what it offers.

Re: Preparing to move to Zurich

Welcome to Zurich. We moved from the US in 2014 to the Zurich area but had a bit an advantage with me being born in Germany and speaking German (and soso Swiss German). We had a relocation company hired by the company I work for taking care of most things (e.g. support in apartment hunting).

My wife was born and grew up in China (Beijing) but we are both US citizens. My wife's family is still in China and unfortunately we can't visit them any time soon. We both work and have a 15 year old son that goes to the international school.

Are you US citizens? If so tax filing is painful and even with only a green card you need to watch out for some issues. Also if you plan to keep accounts with US banks / Investment companies / US credit cards etc. do not tell them that you moved and change the mailing address on file to a friend in the US.

Switzerland has its quirks and it is a change from the US. Overall it has a lot of advantages but there are few (good) Chinese restaurants here.

I am sure since you read the forum you have already learned a lot of things but let me know if you have any questions.

Re: Preparing to move to Zurich

Didn't want to open a new topic, thus reusing this one.

Moving cantons from Basel to Zürich, just wanted to check if these fees are correct or I clicked something wrong in the process.

Top one is a bit confusing to me (out-of-canton?, EU?); but I assume:
First one is for incoming to canton
Second one is for incoming to municipality.

Correct?

Yes, that seems correct. if you provide a link it'd be easier to check.

Thank you!

Oh forgot to mention, I was using the eUmzug service (pretty neat if you ask me!)

Yeah I found them on a quick google search, but as I didn't know them, I was reluctant to mention them. I'm glad it's worked out for you.

Sorry, read your first posting again:

Foreigner law Out-of-Canton fee Move to (EU) is just really weird. I imagine it means a fee of (CHF?) 40.00 is payable by a foreigner who moves away from one Canton (i.e. move away from Basel). It's not clear though if this is the municipality fee or a fee that the company charges you for handling the Abmeldung.

The second one I think means Anmeldung in Zürich, but again, I don't know if that's the municipality fee they'll pass on to you or the company's fee. Maybe call them and check.

I agree it is confusing.
However that doesn't stand for deregistration/departure from Basel Stadt - as that is a separate item costing 20CHF.
Both of these above stand under "Cantonal arrival fees ZH".

Edit: I also hold a C permit and there might be different treatment vs. L or B; and this app did not ask me anything about that status.
I'll drop ZH Amt a call, and maybe rather leave it for in-person processing.

Re: Preparing to move to Zurich

Yes, it's clearer now. The 40.00 is also mentioned here https://www.stadt-zuerich.ch/prd/de/...den/zuzug.html

It also points out that there my be additional costs Migrationsamtliche Gebühren (je nach Art der Bewilligung unterschiedlich) (Migration fees (may vary according to the type of permit).

I suppose the moving company will let you know what these additional costs will be.

I'd check how much exactly they'll charge you on top of the fees they'll pay on your behalf.

Thanks for additional info.

There is no moving company involved here.
eUmzug seems to be a federal service, which just streamlines deregistering & registering between the cantons.
