Seeking advise, new to area, commute Freiburg to Basel

Hi all,

I am moving back to Europe in the Autumn to live with my BF, he is German living in Freiburg. The plan is for me to work in Basel but the more I look into it it seems quite a long way.

I know there is the ICE so seems to be ~35mins from Freiburg Hbf to Basel, but 20 mins either side also to get home to station and station to work is making me question really how feasible this is.

Is anyone doing this commute? Would be so grateful for any practical experiences!

Thanks in advance!!

Re: Seeking advise, new to area

You described it, 40 mins ICE plus whatever within-city commute that comes from where you live and work. What else do you need to know? Probably the best bet is to look for something where you can work from Freiburg part of the time.

Was just wondering about practical experience people might have, unfortunately academia is not great in that part of Germany so hence the need to work in CH.

No personal experience, but I worked for years in Basel with a great many Germans who did the trip on a daily basis. For someone from the UK, used to working in London for example, it's well within the acceptable norms of daily commuting, but there's a mindset that needs to be adopted such that you find something useful or relaxing to do with the time, be it working, catching up on social media or just reading a good book.

I've been doing a 4 hour commute (2 hours each way, door to door) every day for over 2 years now.

It's fine if you can work on the train and that time can be considered as part of your work.

Thank you all very much! Yes, you are right I guess I can work the 35 mins on the train at least! Thank you, doesn't seem as daunting now!

And check with your employer that the time on the train counts as work time, not all allow that.

Re: Seeking advise, new to area, commute Freiburg to Basel

if you can work on the train and it counts, that would be good.

If you're getting into academia, this point might be moot. If you're not going to be a lab rat, maybe you can do some work from home and it's even better.

In big cities in certain parts of the world this would not be considered a superlong commute, so it's all relative to your personal lifestyle anyway.
