New to the Forum

Greetings one and all!
New to this forum and have a vested interest in my family line in Switzerland.
My Surname is Studer and I have discovered many Studer's all over the globe, but I am sure my line comes from Solothurn. I am pursuing my background and hopefully someone on the forum may be able to assist in my quest. If someone on the forum is familiar with the Solothurn Kanton or the city, I would very much like to hear from you, if you are interested in my journey to my Swiss roots.

I am also considering moving to Switzerland at a later date, so again, assistance from forum members would be most helpful!
I am retired from work and promise not to be a burden on Swiss Finances!!!!
Married to my German born wife, Marion, for 43 years.
Glad to be here and reading all the rules and some of the posts.
Thanks for taking the time to read my short introduction!
Michael

Welcome to the forum.

Can't help with the ancestry thing, but for moving here - well, that will depend on what your finances are like. What you consider adequate may not be the same thing as the Swiss do. You'd have to check with the cantonal migration office of whichever canton to plan to move to what you need in the way of finances/assets/etc.

You also need to know that as a US national you'll continue to have US tax filing obligations and could owe the US tax on top of your Swiss ones depending on your financial situation. There are double taxation treaties in place so research those and also here

https://www.irs.gov/individuals/inte...-living-abroad

Most Swiss banks will not accept you as a client and the few who will, will require you to sign a W-8 form allowing them to pass your bank account info on to the IRS. You will also have to file FBAR returns for all foreign, i.e. outside of US, bank accounts each year.
