Moved to Basel from Vancouver from Adelaide

Hello!

I live in Basel, moved here 6 weeks ago, but have been coming and going a lot since then, but now I have my bicycle assembled I am exploring, working out tram routes, swimming in the Rhine, well, last month when it was warm! I know Switzerland pretty well since visiting friends in the Emmental for 20 years and consulting in Pharma at Basel (of course!) since 2003 from 4 to 5 times a year. Spent 6 months sabbatical here in 04, living in klein Basel, and now again in 08, in gross Basel. Love going to the farmers market in Lörrach on Saturdays, Cult Kino week days, galleries (especially the Baylor Foundation and Art Basel) other days and wanderwegging in the Jura or overnight hikes in the Alps. Cycling is a wonder here. I have a number of very good German and Swiss friends here, but miss English contact and humour... the Swiss are very witty as you know by now...

So I am an expat Aussie, backpacked for 2 years, did my PhD in Toronto, Post Doc'ed in Vancouver and now am a prof there with a large lab. Even though I carry a Canadian Passport, if Canadians and Aussies are vs each other in the olympics, I support the downunderians. However, even being away for over 20 years my accent is certainly not Canadian, but probably best described as mid-pacific... but charming and sophisticated as every Australian!

I work hard but like to have a good work/life balance also. Very interested in photography, starting to paint now (but I am an optimist!), love wine and wineries in the Alsace (totally into Reisling), I travel lots and find that a very important part of my life, having the Herald Tribune delivered daily is one of the great things about living here, I like all things Mac and have the new iPod touch and think it is the most amazing thing I have ever bought, learning about italian music (Lucio Dalla, Paolo Conte) that supplements my love of Pink Floyd and now Roger Waters, U2, old Eagles, Van Morrison and Jazz and as a scientist I crave interesting conversation and people.

I stumbled on this forum the other day, heard of such things, but never participated (no reason to find one or use one before) even though I do fb, hence I look forward to meeting some of you!

Cheers

Chris

Re: Moved to Basel from Vancouver from Adelaide

Seeing as you've got a bike you may be interested to join some of us on the fortnightly bike ride that Pat and Jenny organise. Keep an eye on the social events area for the next one. It should be next Wednesday evening Also, the curry night is a good way to get to know some people here. It's not posted yet but due to be on the 2nd September......I'll get round to organising it soon

Re: Moved to Basel from Vancouver from Adelaide

Thanks Barry
I will go cycling, actually I had found that page and signed up befor introducing myself... I am proud being able to do that so soon a forum! but running is a bit of a mystery to me... I am fit for cycling but running has always been a bit of an issue for me. So I am pretty impressed by runners who can do it without stopping ... or dying! But it is not really for me unfortunately... I value having an intact aorta and major arteries!

Then you'll love the cycling group. Really easy paced, often we just wait for someone to fix their puncture! This time it'll be into France.

@mimi1981, By the way, what is the situation with next month's curry night?

Re: Moved to Basel from Vancouver from Adelaide

Hello Mimi,

It was a really nice cycle trip and the weather was lovely. It was a shame you could not make it. There were 10 or 12 of us I believe. The canal was a wonder and I suggested we do a quick detour over the new bridge between France and Germany... it is great. Have you done that? Hope you can make it next time!

Hi Chris,

I really am so gutted that I could not make it. Work was a pain (when isn't it??) and by the time I left and knowing I had to allow time to find my passport I knew I wouldn't make it.

Next time I hope

Yep, you've sure picked a good place to come to. That bike path along the Wiese is my way to and from work. It's a hard life...

Hi Chris,

Glad you enjoyed the bike ride. I know you said you couldn't make the next one but Pat has actually arranged it for 3 weeks time so it doesn't clash with the hangovers after the curry night. It's going to be on 10th Sept if you are around.

Jenny

Re: Moved to Basel from Vancouver from Adelaide

Hey Jen

Yes it was a great ride wasnt it... I loved the canal and the white swans in it, but also the sidelighting of Basel from the cycle bridge over the Rhine... that was great. I want to cycle over it al the way next time... but the next week I am in Ghent for three days... I a sad but October I am ere for about 6 weeks in a row, so hopefully then three rides! Thanks for organising it.. Hey I saw Caroline on my way to work today in her bike too!

Cheers
