Hi Everybody

We are Piet and Magda Oosthuizen and we are living in Pretoria, South Africa. We are busy to negotiate to go and work in Basel Switzerland and we want to find out more about living in Basel. Maybe there are other South Africans or anyone who can assist us in some questions.

we've been near baden since march and having a ball! basel is a beautiful place!
let me know when you pack, i have some suggestions on what to bring with if you come with a container?
we have been amazed at how many south africans are in CH, thought they all went down under...but many chose to come here and learn german/french/italian!

Hi Piet and Magda.

We are currently in Edenvale Johannesburg and going through the same process.

We will be moving to Geneva, latest 16 November as my wife will be working for the WHO.

I have several deals on the go, nothing definate on contract but looking good.

The problem is not so much getting to or living in CH for us, we have been there before for 6 months and loved it, it's the move from here, especially selling/renting our house that's the problem as well as tax clearance, reseve bank clearance etc.

Please contact me per e mail, bweb@hot.co.za and perhaps we can share information gathered and even a container if it comes down to that.

We cant wait as we are now done with SA as both of us have been very active all our lives giving all our skills, talents and extensive ecucational knowledge and experience to our country. We are not leaving our country, our country has left us. We are now deemed "unemployable" even though we are both accredited and aknowledged world experts in our respective fields. We like to work and contribute, but currently have been sidelined for the last 2 years working at low levels and only sporadically due to politics.

We have been living in N.Ireland for the last 7 years .
We left S.Africa in 2001 .Tony is a Capetonian and I am Irish and lived in Cape Town for 23 years .
We are just waiting to finalise a post in Basel and may be moving in January.

Will be good to catch up with some S.Africans when we get there!

I am from P-Town, which I consider to be a rat-infested ****hole. Basel is nice, a little pokey, but nice. There are loads of yoots in baseball caps and an abundance of hair gel, which should remind you of Sunnyside in the late 80's.

Basel is a beautiful place where i want to go,i'm a chinese .so i can't give you any other advice.

Hi! Welcome to the Forum! My hubby & I are also going through the same thing, also moving to Basel, and the Forum has helped so much in easing the worries that we all go through. I have made so many friends on the site that I will not feel at all lonely when we get there! Just know that apparently it is not too cold for Mozzies in CH - so pack your nets (See the thread on Mosquitos).

Maybe when we all get there we can meet up for a Veggie Braai?

I am from Zimbabwe, my husband & I moved to Basel in July so we're (very) new here. If you have any specific questions, please feel free to ask! sometimes the newest people are good to ask because we have moving experiences freshest in mind. We love it here -if you are moving in winter right from a lovely climate like SA, you might find it tough, but it's worth it. And if you speak Afrikaans, you've got a head start. Good luck!

Ons is ook van Pretoria, weet van al die dinge van trek na Switzerland. We(my husband and I) have been living in the Basel/Baselland area for nearly 2.4 years now and are stilling loving it. There are more and more South Africans coming to Switzerland, there is so much to do and things to organize, if you need any help/advise/just talk in Afrikaans, please do not hesitate to contact us.
