Intro

Hello all,

Thanks for a wonderful forum! I am moving to Basel in a few weeks to work for one of the companies based north of the river. I have just registered here to perhaps post a message or two every now and then but would very much prefer to do the rest of the intro in person...read a lot about curry night in Basel so eager to meet you all at the next one!

A bit here, a bit there and looks like I am going to end up in Basel for sometime now.

See you all soon,

WhoAmI?

Re: Intro

Welcome to the Forum.
In spite of your wish to do an Intro in person, an excellent idea, a wee bit more in your Infos would help us to know to whom we are talking.
Hope all goes well with the moving and so on.

The name of the OP reiterated in the signature should be a hint that this person is not sure him/herself, Mrs Longbyt.

I like the use of the word 'curious'. It has a double meaning, both of which apply to me! It's nice that you didn't simply say 'nosey'.
I don't see why Rustygraben and other males should get all the thanks though. If I try very hard I can perhaps cheer you up too; in which case it should be 'you guys and gals are great'.
However, you don't have to edit your post. Just this once, I shall forgive you.

I must warn you that there are some lonely old toads on the site, so don't get upset when they shout nasty things back at some of your questions that they assume should be general knowledge. Poor things have not much better to do all day.
Oh dear, oh dear. Have I put my foot in it again already? I hope you don't mean me, Twinkletoes.

Many of those 'lonely old toads' are some of the most helpful members of the forum, with the most useful information to share, and are quite willing to help people who genuinely need support, and are unable to find it for themselves.

They do, however, get a little frustrated with those who are unwilling to make any effort to find things out for themselves, via Google or the search function on this very website.

No, I wasn't referring to you. I can fully appreciate and respect that there are many thjings we can learn from the veterans on this site. I was actually referring to a nasty and unwarranted comment that was made to a friend of mine who asked a question recently.

Some of us are VERY green when it come to this type of thing, so while it may seem lazy to you, we try to do a google search and end up in tangles, so then we come here. I have difficulty navigating around these sites at the best of times, but so we learn....

I agree with you that on occasions some of the responses to simple questions have been harsh. I understand that the more experienced members in particular will get frustrated when they see similar questions asked again and again. It is easy to forget that we were all 'Internet Virgins' once.

What is important is that people respond considerately. A simple 'This has already been covered elsewhere' or 'You could easily find the answer through Google' could suffice. Sometimes it is nicer to get an informed opinion from experienced members than a factual answer from another site.

Before anyone mentions it, this has been covered in more detail elsewhere: Referring Members to Google If anyone has additional comments to make on this, it would be the best place to continue the discussion.

A completely different thing is responding to posts with a differing opinion, or challenging previous posts, as part of the general discussion. I see nothing wrong with this.

Speak for yourself! I can't abide people being wrong - and when they disagree with me, they are wrong.

These people should know to whom they are speaking, and show appropriate obesiance.

Anyway, to the original poster: Welcome to the forum, and I hope you settle in comfortably to your new home. It's a bit like a cross between Wolverhampton and Liverpool, but with better biscuits.

Good luck!

I'm still really a virgin. I've only just reached second base what with my new found ability to cut and paste, but I'm getting there.

Welcome to the forum! Normally troll posts like twinkletoes' aren't left standing but what can you do on a weekend when the users decide to deal with it themselves. Give the forum a chance and the forum will give you two!
