From Finland to Zürich

Hello,

I will move to Zürich in the beginning of January and start working on a permanent contract in Widen (Berikon) on 12th Jan. I'm quite nervous, worried and even scared about my big decision, as I will move alone to a new country and company (after working 15 yrs in the same company). I know only one person in Zürich and i cannot speak German, yet. So i would be happy to meet new people, i will most probably join many social events (i hope there will be many!). I also belong to the couchsurfing network and will join their meetings in Zürich.

In January i will also turn 40 yrs, but i'm much younger in my mind. I like snowboarding and hiking, that was part of the reason why i wanted to move nearer to the Alps. I also like salsa and i'm looking forward to the salsa clubs there. And many other things

I come from Finland, but i have also lived in Surrey, England and in Nice, France.

See you i hope,
Mari

Re: From Finland to Zürich

Welcome to the Forum - a bit of a late Welcome as you have already posted a bit before you had definite plans made, but it is good to read the nice lot of Info in your Introduction. You sound like the sort of person who is adaptable and even if you don't speak German yet, you have ideas of how to cope in a 'new' country which is a great help. Lots of English speakers here to help you along the way.
Good luck with the move.

Yes, definitely welcome!

If you're looking for accomodation (among other things!) just go looking in the appropriate areas of this forum, do at least a quick search first (as most of your questions will have been asked before!) and then if you can't find what you need, ask in the right area... many very helpful people on here, with a very large accumulated body of knowledge!

Hi MariV

Welcome to the forum and I hope you get over the initial culture shock and fear. I am sure it will be easier than you imagine.

Gosh, 15 years working for the same company..! Maybe a change will be like a breath of fresh air!

Try joining the German conversation group weekly in Zurich and other events and meeting people through this forum.

Regards

Liam

Re: From Finland to Zürich

Welcome to Switzerland and Zurich. It is a great city and you will fall in love with it, if you give it a chance Lots of culture and events. Never a dull moment. You are getting here at the right time to enjoy the rest of the ski season but then just as you've had enough, spring will surprise you. Summer is amazing except in July so if you're planning to leave for a vacation, chose July! Don't worry about learning German right away. People are very kind and patient here with language. But, if you plan to stick around for more than a year, you'd better take a lesson and make an effort

Here's a website I've found useful: mygirlfriendguide.com. All the best to you for a smooth start.
