What are Lachen or Freienbach like?

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all responses to my first mail. Has been very helpful for husband and I. He is currently in Switzerland battling the work contract. His company has suggested Lachen or Freienbach as a place to live. Bear in mind we live in Bristol city. Ok, we have a kid, so night-time isn't relevant, but we like to be fairly near things, so we're trying to figure out whether there's anything in these places! Don't want to be stuck out in the middle of nowhere...
Husband has sent me photos today of the Alps. Man, it's beautiful out there. Hope it's worth the money!

Where will your husband be working? Locally I suspect if they are suggesting these places.

I used to live in Freienbach and still work there. Live in Wollerau a km or two away and know a lot of people who live in Lachen.

Pros
- taxes very low in Freienbach, pretty low and going down in Lachen
- both on the train line and easy motorway access for Zurich
- 25 minutes closer to the ski slopes
- Lachen probably has a bit more of a town feel with a centre, Freienbach is a bit soulless I always feel
- Lachen has reasonable local commerces and Freienbach is close to the "big" seedamm plaza shopping centre nearby (but dont get too excited, swiss shopping is still a pretty 3rd world experience)

Cons
- rents in Freienbach can be very high due to low taxes, and not likely to offset tax unless you are earning reasonably big bucks (say 200kchf plus)
- nearest international school not so close up near Horgen, but a few bilingual montessoris nearby (not my field of expertise)
- unless you are going to be with a local international employer like Man Investments, there doesnt seem to be too much intl community (plenty of foreigners, but no community) locally (although maybe more through the kids)

Hope that helps
Daniel

Re: What are Lachen or Freienbach like?

I looked this up and on a taxable income of 200kchf, Freienbach taxes would be 14.4kchf lower than Richterswil in Kanton Zurich about 5km closer to Zurich. I suspect the rent would be about 1200chf month lower for a nice 3 bed appartment... say 2500 vs 3700.

Just as a little point... Its all well and good looking to minimize taxes but actually getting property is likely to be your major concern. Also Pfäffikon next to Freienbach is very good for taxes and somewhat bigger. Both are on the lake which is why the property prices do tend to be somewhat higher. Pfäffikon is at the point of the seedamm so getting to rapperswil on the other side is easier and shopping there is quite good, the best on the southern end of the lake.

Lachen is a nice town; Freiebach is nice too. As Richard pointed out, Pfäffikon is the most connected town in the area and still in SZ so you have nice taxes.

Where is the company? Why are they suggesting that area?

Not so hard to rent nowadays vs 5 years ago. Theres a lot of building going on. Now finding a nice place to buy is nightmare.

Very interested to know more about renting in Pfäffikon. What is the going range for a decent 3 bedroom 100m2 place. Safe.

Moving to Lachen later this year, in case anyone has any updates, tips or general advice.

Not new to Switzerland so no need for complete newbie info!

Restaurant Porto in the harbour area is reputedly the nicest place to eat.

And you're becoming a tax exile? tsk tsk...

Surely after 6 years here I've earned the right to think I pay too much in Kanton ZH?

Lob - Give me a ring sometime soon actually, wanna talk to you.
