Re: Who are we?

Who said the art of conversation is dead!
Well if you can't beat them; join them! Here goes...

1. Country of origin / before coming to switzerland
York, U.K.
2. Place where you live in switzerland
Moving to Oerlikon, Zurich
3. How long you have been here
Not got there yet
4. Occupation
Mad Scientist (Research Psychologist)
5. Do you intend to stay here.
As long as it takes for me to convince my partner that UK academic jobs are as well funded as those in Switzerland, that the UK is not full of yobs, that there are many meaningful things to do to have a good quality of life in Yorkshire.. Oh yes and that the UK trains run as efficiently as the Swiss ones... Guess that means I am going to be in Zurich for the long haul.

6. Any other comments you wish to make. eg hobbies, favourite things.
I am a bit of a culture vulture, love the arts. I am a published poet when I can find the time to turn off my academic brain and get in touch with the creative side. I love meeting people, chatting and exchanging cultural differences.

7. Think of your time in switzerland. tell us the first thing that comes to mind.

Tree hugging up a mountain. The birth of a baby elephant observed on the webcam at Zurich Zoo and a boat ride down Zurich See on a warm spring day, when you know back in the UK it is pouring down with rain

Re: Who are we?

1. Country of origin / before coming to switzerland
England (Manchester, Northampton, London), France (provence kind of near Avignon)

2. Place where you live in switzerland
Vevey, VD

3. How long you have been here
6 years

4. Occupation
This is the complicated bit...
- I work part-time in the local cinemas where I run a free service for the English speaking community informing them of which films are on in English for the following week. (www.cinerive.com)
- I work as an independent insurance advisor (How the Swiss love insurance... )
- I am a drummer in a Swiss band. Not a "real" job hence the other 2! (won't put the link here as I need to put better pics of me on it :P )

5. Do you intend to stay here.
Yep, but never say never...

6. Any other comments you wish to make. eg hobbies, favourite things.
I obviously love music, spend a lot of time playing, going to festivals and gigs etc.
I also like the cinema. Just got back from the Locarno film festival.
Love meeting new people and chatting.

7. Think of your time in switzerland. tell us the first thing that comes to mind.
Gigs, parties, fun...
Most of my friends are Swiss so I don't seem to have the same prejudices as some ex-pats who feel the Swiss are cold, anti-social etc.
Quality of life...
Swimming in the lake on sunny days
Loads and loads and loads of paperwork and bureaucracy.

Re: Who are we?

Hello, about us:

1. My girlfriend is from Hungary (Budapest), I'm Dutch (Amsterdam).
Living half-way, between HU and NL and enjoying it!
2. Living in Zurich, the little big city.
3. We've been here since Jan 2006.
4. I'm working in supply management consulting area as project manager for a big three-letter US company.
5. We're intending to stay here long-term.
6. First things that come to mind.
- Beautiful country to live: unparallelled landscape, nature (skiing!!) and general feeling of spaciousness
- Swiss are very polite, civilised and friendly
- "In der Schweiz wird nichts geschenkt" - a Swiss farmer we met in Engelberg told us.
- Obsessed with cleaning: seen people vacuum-cleaning outside there house twice now.
- Shops could be open longer...a supermarket (Marinello) that opens at 7am on Saturday and closes at 4pm already :-(
- Integration with the Swiss is an area to work on, as well as expanding our social network with fellow expats!
- Overall: feeling more and more at home here!

Re: Who are we?

1. U.S.A, California

2. Zofingen, Aargau

3. Almost 5 years

4. Creating illusions, dumbfounding the learned by simplifying truths and demystifying complex systems, designing experiences on paper or software. In other words, A.F.A.B. (Anything For A Buck)

5. Not permanently. Only for as long as I need to be here. I still plan to experience living in Maui's Hana, and maybe somewhere in Japan, and I've been craving life in big cities lately.

6. I decided to prioritize life over material possessions, and life experiences became richer and more substantial. The material necessities arrived on their own with very little effort.

7. First 6 months were a blast. Next 6 mo. started to get boring. Followed by 6 mo. of sadness and loneliness, then 6 mo. of despair and negativity, followed by 6 mo. healing and reconciliation, then 6 mo. of rebirth and reinvention. The issue of being a foreigner is no longer my problem, it's a problem for those locals who make an issue of it. I now feel like I own myself 100% again and I own the space around me. Interestingly, this puzzles the locals and makes them feel like they are the foreigners.... well they are to me!

"In der Schweiz wird nichts geschenkt" - In Switzerland nothing will be given (as a present). In other words, nothing comes from free. Good advice.

This kind of demonstrates why we have a policy on the use of foreign words and phrases doesn't it? (no discussion of this on this thread please - this thread has remained quite "pure" so far, let's leave it to collect people's info)
