Australian Living in Olten (Solothurn)

Greetings to all,

I signed up to EF along time ago, but never posted any threads or comments until today. Thought it might be a good idea to introduce myself first.

I have been living in Olten for just over 3 years now after moving here from Sydney with my Swiss wife who is now finishing her Business Degree. I have to say it was hard to get settled into Switzerland for me at first as I never learnt to speak a foreign language ever before coming here. Now I speak basic to medium German and still working on it, oh, and I understand a lot of Swiss German, from this area anyway.
I originally grew up in a family owned business involving production of flowers all the way to Wholesaling and Retailing in an over 10 Retail shop franchise chain. I am myself quite a competent Florist with a very Modern style and this is what led me to find my first job in Switzerland as a Florist working in a wholesale warehouse mass producing arrangements and bouquets for Manor and other various major chains (highly boring, repetitive work for a creative florist). It was hell and extremely hard to do after owning and operating my own Retail business in Sydney which I sold prior to relocating, but I had no other options for making an income at the time especially without any German knowledge. I was eventually laid off about 2 months before the Business was taken over.
This was the time that I found my second job in Switzerland as a Leather Technician. What is that? I guess you're asking. I basically learnt this profession for three months prior to taking on the position where I would restore damaged and worn old leather on old sofas or any other leather products, but mainly sofas, we also re-coloured and colour matched leather. You should know I don't have any further educational Certificates except in Fitness Training, which I acquired in Australia, so it has been difficult in finding work here especially without the German. I was recently laid off from this job too as the Financial crisis effected this industry dramatically and it was forced to downsize. Experience alone doesn't get you far in Switzerland.

I am now unemployed and studying German full time while searching for a new position, hopefully in an English speaking company or as a Personal or Fitness Trainer, which is what I love to do. (Helping people reach their Fitness goals and transform themselves)

Anyway, I would also like to say, I think this forum is hilarious sometimes especially when I see that people have the same opinions and realizations as I do about switzerland. The information is great too, when it is correct.

If any Aussies or English speakers live around the area, don't hesitate to drop me a mail.

Cheers

I'll second that especially since fellow EF'er Ian Nichol owns and runs the Penny Farthing pub there and organises from time to time, the rather excellent "Great British Breakfast" event.

Keep an eye on the events calendar and maybe we'll see each other.

Thanks for the welcomes and will surely be looking out for the Great British Breakfast. Sounds like something comforting when the weather is so cold and miserable.

Hey! I spent some time living in that area too. When you get the chance you should check out Zofingen (preferably when - or if it ever - warms up a little).

Re: Australian Living in Olten (Solothurn)

Boiaustralia,
Welcome. I am an Aussie myself in Solothurn and have been here 3 years. I am also in the Anglo Swiss Club Solothurn which is a great way to meet people.
The Club consists primarily of English speaking country foreigners. We need to bolster the Aus numbers in the club Mate so come on along to an event or two. The next one is the Easter Brunch, this would be a good introduction to the club to find out what its about.

On occasion there is the card night where a few of the guys get together for a night of poker.
PM me if interested.

Cheers, LagerMon
