impending swiss arrival from DK!

Hi all!

I have been a lurker on this site for a few months, and now am somewhat close to *sealing the deal* with a contract in Geneva.

I am an American who currently resides in Copenhagen, the land of dark skies and flat land! I do hope that all pulls thorugh so that I can call CH home.

Haha, I'm in a similar situation at least in weather terms. My girlfriend and I plan to get married and move to Switzerland within a year and hope she'll be able to find a nursing job somewhere like Lausanne.

Hi
welcome .
World traveller. lots of nursing jobs, however tell your girlfriend to brush up on her French if she is not French speaking.Might be pretty obvious but she will find it pretty hard if she is not a francophone or pretty fluent.

Re: impending swiss arrival from DK!

The weather here is one of many reasons, yet is a driving factor for sure! We had our FIRST full day of sun last sunday in over a month! And yesterday and today has been sunny as well (gasp!). Perfect weather for gardening, sprucing up the house outside in preparations for putting it on the market.

About Lausanne/Geneva and French, I agree that in order to work as a nurse, speaking French will cross many barriers. Good thing is that French and Italian, spoken in CH, is just plain French and Italian. Now, hopping over to Zürich where Swiss German is spoken (I believe 65% of all Swiss speak Swiss German), it is terribly difficult. Swiss German is a spoken language, not written, and they communicate via writing and reading in High German (NOT anything close to Swiss German). Confusing!

Congrats on the impending marriage and best of luck in your move to CH!

Hi all,

Fortunately girlfriend speaks fluent high German and reasonable (A level) French. It may be slightly difficult at first dealing with French in a hospital setting but she should be able to find her way without too much trouble. She's great with languages.

Thanks for all the welcome by the way.

Ignorant bliss, I hope you are able to sell your house at the right time and at the right price. I think Lausanne will be a wonderful place especially if you like any outdoor sports! I've heard it's got a good night life for a small city.

Perhaps I'll see you all at some Lausanne meet up in the future?!

Wonderful that she speaks French! I am sure that it will not be too difficult to become fluent when using it everyday.

I hope to be in Lausanne/Nyon by May-ish... so we shall definitely cross paths at an outing! I have noticed that there are a lot more in Zürich, yet all it takes is a shout out here on this board and voila!
