Toronto to Zurich in t-1 month!

Hi everyone!

My name is Julia and I'm from Toronto, Canada. I'm 23 and just graduated from the University of Toronto, University College in Anthropology and History. My favourite things in the world are good friends, good music, good wine and strawberry gelato. I've been eagerly awaiting to join this forum (after months of lurking) and not that my visa has been fully approved, I am here! will be arriving in August to begin a year as an Au Pair and am so excited, nervous and happy!

I don't know anyone in Zurich (or Switzerland) besides my host family and I have so many questions. I am quite happy to see that many of them have already been answered in the forum. I'll definitley have some new ones to add, but thanks already to everyone here for your help!

-Julia

P.s. Happy Canada day to all the ex-pats!

Hey Julia...just wanted to say Hi...and let you know that my daughter spent 6 months in Lausanne as an au-pair last year. I have family in Switzerland but I live in Canada. You will love it. The country and the people are great. Good Luck!!

Welcome from a fellow Canuck.

As for the bike, bring one with you if you can as bikes are very expensive here. Otherwise they have monthly 'velobourses' that you can pick up a used one at.

Happy Canada Day!

Hi Julia,

Happy Canada Day to you too! I've been away from Canada for 14 years now. Love Switzerland, but really miss the wilderness and wide open spaces of Canada. You'll have to add good chocolate to your list while you are here ;-)

Re: Toronto to Zurich in t-1 month!

Hi ! I am from Toronto too. I came to Switzerland 5 years ago, spent 3 years in Zurich as a nanny/au pair and then met my hubby and now live near Basel on the German border. Zurich is a great city...lots to see and do, and night life is pretty good from what I remember. Are you going to be right in Zurich or in one of the towns on Lake Zurich? I was working on both sides while there... on the Gold cost-and on the Silver lining as they call it... the boat around the lake is really great and gives you an idea of the area around you. When I was there, there was a group of us nanny/au pairs that got together every weekend or during the week...maybe ask your host family if they know friends that have other nanny/au pairs they can introduce you to...always good to have a connection. Public transport is great around the city with the Trams and you can get monthly passes for train and trams and boat...all one pass!
If you have any questions just ask! I really enjoyed living in Zurich... I miss it... I havn't been there since my daughter was born, almost a year ago now! Oh Summer is a great time to go to Zurich...tons and tons of people line the coast of the lake and tan/play volleyball/swim/picnic....just really neat....oh and there are woman only swim/tanning platforms along the lake as well as mixed...just be warned many people go nude!
Have a safe flight over and have fun!
Oh...as a former au pair/nanny....make sure the family and you sit down and go through schedule and what you expect from the job and what they expect from you...some people will take advantage and some are very nice...I have had experience with both types of people while working as an au pair/nanny.... like I said..have any questions just ask!

thanks for the tips! I will be living in Zurich proper, don't know too much about what to expect- will be around Zurich Kreuzplatz station. Expect a lot of pm's from me! I have so many questions, its hard to know where to start, but I've been reading up and have had great communication with the family and their current au pair- looks great so far!

And thanks to everyone else! As for bringing my own bike- as of right now, its probably not worth the extra baggage I'd be paying!

Thanks again!

Re: Toronto to Zurich in t-1 month!

Hi Julia,

Firstly, "Happy Canada Day"..... (my flatmate just moved to Canada and she wished me 'Happy Canada Day", but I felt it best to wish an Actual Canadian as well...ha ha).

I'm moving to Zurich right at the end of July as well (pretty much August). It seems like a great city.

I only joined this forum the other day to get info on what to do... it's very helpful, and the people on here seem pretty good.

Good luck with the move.

Bill

P.S. (I'm moving from Bondi in Sydney, Australia)

Hi Julia
Welcome to the forum.
I am also from Toronto and have been here for 2 yrs. You will love it.
A coulpe things you might want to keep in mind... it doenst get as cold here in the winter ! The only time I use my -real- winter gear is when I go home for Christmas ! But, it also doesnt get as hot... which I actually miss.
Also, cosmetics and toiletries are really expensive here so if you have favourites I would bring them !
Enjoy your stay !

Re: Toronto to Zurich in t-1 month!

Thanks for the tips! I was thinking to buy all that stuff before I leave, and youve just confirmed that for me! thats exciting about winters. I wish I didnt have to bring my "real" winter coat, but I want to ski a bit while Im there, so itll have to take up the extra room in my suitcase- I intend on sending it home after one of my friends visit me!
