Buona sera, Nadine and welcome to this forum. You're right, it's a good place to come. Nice and funny, sometimes also grumpy people meet here - just like in real life. Come back often and ask many questions, we are only too eager to assist.

You are going to live in Switzerland's Florida!

I am really delighted! But it is such a royal pain to find a moving company that is not extortionate!
I have so little time to get organized and move, it is frightening really!

Hi Nadine, and welcome to the EF!

Moving can be a pain, especially if you have a short time-frame ... but good luck with everything that has to be done and, once you are settled, get into the Social Events to get in touch with some people who can understand what you've gone through to get here!

Will sure do! Will need to find a place where films play in english!
I don't think I will survive without going to the movies on a regular basis.

Re: Hello from London and Soon to be in Lugano

Welcome to Lugano, Nadine but do brace yourself: all it has in common with London is the initial 'L'...! you do get to see films in English from time to time but beware as in the Italian-speaking world they have a tendency to dub everything. Cinema Corso and Cinema Lux are the ones to watch out for plus there is an English Film Club showing fairly recent movies very cheaply roughly on a fortnightly basis (they start in October) at Cittadella. Failing that, you can subscribe to Bluewin TV, digital TV that shows Film 4 and has a facility for renting films in the original language.
Do e-mail me when you get here if you need more help.
Cheers,
Lorenza

Welcome. I am in Ticino - Mendrisio.

How much are you moving?
If you have a husband/partner to load up, I can put you in contact with a company.
I moved my furniture from a 6 Bed, 5 Reception room house from North London to Lugano in a return load in an articulated lorry. Cost £1,750 inc VAT. and then I gave the driver 200 Euros to unload with me.

Ciao Lorenza,
That is fantastic news indeed... I will be arriving to Lugano on the 21st of August and will have a few days to settle in before I have to start working on the 1st of September.
Apparently the apartment I will be moving into will have cablecom so I might use them for my internet and digital Tv since they seem to offer some of the british channels that are on freeview here.

Do you think I should order it before hand so it would be up and running by the time I arrive? The Tv is no emergency but I cant live without my internet . I wonder how long it takes them to dispatch the router after ordering it online.

I do appreciate ur advice! so looking forward to some movie going!

I dont have much furniture, just my Tv and Tv stand and the rest are just clothing and junk (DVD, books, small kitchen stuff etc...)
I found a company called Smart Removals and they quoted me £700 to get all my stuff there. I figured it was fairly reasonable.
I got shut down a lot cause I didnt have much stuff... and the whole DHL, UPS etc.. were very pricey!!!

I cant wait to be all moved and in Lugano already!

Re: Hello from London and Soon to be in Lugano

Hi Nadine,

I know how you feel about the internet as I'm the same. It might not be so easy to get through to them if you call Cablecom but give it a try. I'm not sure how long it takes to get connected (does anybody know?) but remember if you have a laptop there is free WIFI on the lakefront even!
I'll ask a friend who's in IT tonight if he has any tips and let you know.
And remember, if you are around at this time next year, you shouldn't miss the Locarno Film Festival (www.pardo.ch), not bad at all!
Good luck with the move and let me know if you need any further tips.
ciao
Lorenza

Re: Hello from London and Soon to be in Lugano

On internet ... we had to wait until we were here to get it organised, luckily I could get access to internet at work while we were waiting to move in and then get it hooked up ... went through Swisscom, phone & ADSL, ordered on a Friday (iirc), phone working on Tuesday, internet Wednesday ... but we went in personally to make the 'order' and took the modem home with us on that Friday.
Can't advise you about other companies, sorry, but they can move swiftly.

Well any food in the world beats british cuisine, mind you they have finessed it a bit... Remind me to tell you the horrors people in this country eat! it's something else!

Re: Hello from London and Soon to be in Lugano

Ciao, I just want to ask how it's going in Lugano?
I'm new to the forum as I'm thinking about moving to Lugano in 2010. I'm currently living in Italy, beside Genova but I'm originally from the UK. Do you have any advise for me? In the next few days I'll be posting some 'please help me' threads as I'm not sure where to start looking for work or a roof!
Did you make it to the Aperitivo Night?
Ask away if you have any Italian language questions!
A presto/soon
Nini
