New Australian resident in Zurich

Hey guys, I'm moving to Zurich with my wife from Perth, Australia next month so I thought I'd Introduce myself. Loving the forums so far and it has given me some great advice regarding housing, insurance and taxation. Just got a postdoctoral position at the University of Zurich (Institute of plant biology/Botanical Garden site). Pretty excited about moving with my new wife and getting settled in Europe. Look forward to chatting on these forums

Hi Jimmy Bee!!
May I bother you and ask why you are immigrating here to Zurich, while you are living in Perth, Australia??

I am considering migrating there (your futur ex-home) and I am genuinely wondering why people would even think of going to...switzerland...
erm!

Hope we can discuss!

Thanks

Re: New Australian resident in Zurich

Hi Jimmy,

I'm a Queenslander who moved here about two weeks ago from Sydney.

Good luck with the move over here.

I wish I could offer you some advice about the move, but I've had a relocation company do all that stuff for me.

I still check a website called 'homegate' (I think with all the w's and a 'ch' at the end) for places to stay. Finding a decent pad isn't that easy.

remember to pack some Vegemite.

oh.... and another tip. Remember that if you bring anything NEW with you, clearly state that you have had it for at least 6 months or the Swiss will tax your arse.

you'll love it here (although I haven't had a winter yet to know what 'cold' really is yet.)

Bill

Re: New Australian resident in Zurich

We're Aussies too - with three children...been in Zurich a year.

If you're working at the botanic gardens near Seefeld/Hegibachplatz, then you might want to look at house options in Zollikon/Zollikerberg or Witikon.

Not sure what your budget is like...but the bus run is very convenient from Tiefenbrunnen or Hegibachplatz for the Botanic gardens - it's a short walk from there to the gardens.

I believe that they have an Acacia pycnantha in the greenhouses at the gardens, and the frogs in the heated ponds are *enormous*...

Keep an eye out for the 'food of the worlds' shopping tour - the cost of eating out is exorbitant here so you might want to adopt a few asian recipes for home...

I'll probably schedule another shopping tour via the forum for some time late September...

We really like it here!

Re: New Australian resident in Zurich

Being a student for the past 9 years have made me adopt a LOT of asian recipes (mostly vietnamese and indonesian). My wife and I love cooking so we will definitely look out for that swisspea. Thanks for the tips on places to live too. How's the rental prices in Zollikon/Zollikerberg/Witikon? Pricey?

Re: New Australian resident in Zurich

Plenty of threads here on Rental prices..

We were paying 400AUD a week for a small townhouse in suburban Sydney before we left Australia...and we found a short-term lease, three bedroom for 1500chf a month - but that was just 'luck' as what was originally a 'short' lease of 3-4 months has been extended now to 2.5 years...on the same rent...

My number 1 tip is to ask your company to guarantee your lease and set you up as the sub-let - there's no way we'd have got the place we did if we tried to lease it ourselves...but our employer is a swiss-registered private company, and the boss set up the arrangements herself...if we move out, they will easily find someone to take it over...
