Just wondering how many of you out there are of Chinese origin?

i got 1 for u: that chinese eat dogs and cats like europeans do chicken. my swiss landlady, who owns 2 cats, asked me just that...

I believe in some parts of China, this is true. Dogs are bred in farms for human consumption, but not the chiwawas or ****zus. Not sure about cats though, first time I heard. They are too thin. No meat.

I have eaten snake soup in Hong Kong, and that really taste like chicken soup.

But if someone from Zurich says "Gruezi", it does not mean the WHOLE of CH speaks Gruezi.... does it?

i agree... well, the east is still very mythical to many people, though it shouldn't be, what with internet and all. what can i say, besides "I promise not to eat your cat"? if i said, cats too skinny, no meat, i'm perpetuating another myth, that i might eat a cat, if it were fat.

Hi, my husband and I are Chinese although he grew up in France and I grew up in the US. We've lived in Hong Kong for 11 years and will be moving to Canton Neuchatel this September. When we went for a "look-see" in Neuchatel two weeks ago, we joked about how excited we were whenever we spotted a "brother" or "sister".

I hope we can stay in touch with our chinese roots that we've honed from living in HK the past several years and especially for the benefit of our two young sons who were born in HK.

I hope to find some kind of chinese group when we get to CH to meet with regularly - I was told there might be a chinese cultural center in Lausanne. Does anyone know if there is a chinese school or center that provides intermediate Mandarin classes for kids?

By the way, I have never eaten any "weird" foods like chicken feet, cow stomach, etc, much less a cat or a dog. I'm even thinking twice about eating pork now after I read an article that pigs were similar to humans in terms of skin, flesh and organs!

I'm a Malaysian-Chinese married to a French - yes, one of those intercultural/interethnic marriages. So far, I'm adjusting pretty well. There are a few places where I get Asian stuff - I cook Chinese so no eating at Chinese restaurants for me...

The language school at Migros offers Mandarin classes. Maybe you can check it out. :)

My parents are from Singapore but I grew up in London so to be honest feel very English, plus I dont speak any Chinese... (not even food cantonese)!

I wanted to comment about this eating dogs, cause for me this is kind of getting old people making jokes about this! If any Swiss people give you a hard time for eating dogs, then remind them that it is also a swiss tradition to eat dogs... Check out the info I found on the net about this!

According to the November 21, 1996, edition of the Swiss newspaper Rheintaler Bote, the rural Swiss cantons of Appenzell and St. Gallen are known to have had a tradition of eating dogs, curing dog meat into jerky and sausages, as well as using the lard for medicinal purposes.

Dog sausage and smoked dog jerky remains a staple in the Swiss cantons of St. Gallen and Appenzell, where one farmer was quoted in a regional weekly newspaper as saying that “meat from dogs is the healthiest of all. It has shorter fibers than cow meat, has no hormones like veal, no antibiotics like pork.”

The production of food from dog meat, however, is illegal in Switzerland.

If anyone were to tell me that or ask me that, I just ask them "Do you eat horse and rabbit meat?" I figure that if it were a pet or work animal, it's in tandem with them asking me that question. Kind of old really but it just goes to show how much exposure that person has of a foreign culture.

What's "food cantonese" btw?

Food cantonese, this is basically the art of speaking chinese in a restaurant, being able to order food! Some peoples chinese is limited to only ordering food. But dont really have that problem here, as I dont eat chinese food in Swizterland!

I am Chinese and currently living in Vienna, but thinking about relocating to Basel.

Is there a large Chinese community in Basel? Are they located in one place, or more spread out?

Are there Chinese supermarkets there? In Vienna, there are some (but sometimes the food is not so fresh.)

What about the normal supermarkets? How is the selection of fresh vegetables and seafood? Are they reasonably priced? In Vienna, it is not so bad, but I didn't find as many green vegetables and, of course, all the fish is already dead :msntongue:
