Try to find out the difference, there have been many threads about this in this forum. Good luck anyway with your move!

Welcome to the forum. We can be friendly if treated nicely.
If you do choose Zurich, drop by one of our social events.
(Alemannic still linguistically a dialect of High German, but don't tell anyone that around here: they become violent at the suggestion. But it does seem incomprehensible to speakers of Standard (High) German.)

That may be a linguist's classification, but in popular usage it is considered a dialect of German... call it anything else and you will confuse more people than you will impress.
And no matter what you call it, Swiss German/Schwiizertütsch/Alemannic is much closer to the German the OP knows than either French, Italian or Rumantsch would be - and the written language here is most definitely German - so I think her argument still stands. Fáilte romhat ar an bhfóram, a evona - welcome to the forum!

Just don't want to get into the whole thing right now (or, really, ever. I'll call it what the natives here call it, thanks very much.)

No offense Mathnut, but evona may well understand Zuriduutsch quicker than Gaeilge unless she was in Cork quite a long time.
If not she'll soon get it... easier than understanding Corkonian dialect of English any day!
A big welcome -in all dialects!!
