San Francisco to Baar

Hi everyone,

I'm Tony and I will be moving to Baar in 2 weeks. My partner of 18 is Swiss and after living together in San Francisco for 16 1/2 years, he moved back home early last year. I will join him on the 19th.

I am relatively new to the forum and just wanted to say "greutzi!"...

I will be attending Alpha Sprach Studio in Zurich learning German; has anyone heard anything about the school??

I read the thread about Slingbox as a solution to my desire to watch American TV and decided to join the group...thanks for the tip.

I am sure once I'm there I will have lots of questions for everyone so, until then...bis spaeter!

Re: San Francisco to Baar

Hey there, Tony!

My husband and I are both native Californians, Silicon Valley (me) and Berkeley (him). We have lived in Zurich for 2 1/2 years and love it.

We had slingbox for awhile and really liked it, but have gotten rid of it recently. We have a laptop connected to our TV downstairs, a wireless network and a proxy server that makes it appear that we are in the US. We can watch a lot of full episodes of shows on their network sites (Comedy Central for Stewart and Colbert; NBC.com for some 30 Rock) and we have joined Hulu and Netflix. We are still working out some slow streaming, but we are getting there. We have found this to be a better and cheaper solution to slingbox. (Something called a roku is also used the way we use our laptop.)

Slingbox was fine, but we had to zoom past the commercials (you do still get some commercials on Hulu) and every time my father-in-law accidentally knocked the slingbox in his basement in South Bend, we couldn't watch TV!

Make sure to stop by Peace Foods when you get to Baar: it is run by two native Californian ladies. They sell delicious bagels and pumpkin pie and chocolate chip cookies. The bakeries here are GREAT, but, sometimes, you just gotta eat something from home!

Be prepared for some sticker shock and a lot less diversity than SF. But, we have 4 seasons (never that I would like those as a native Californian, but I love them); some serious beauty, cleanliness, safety and organization, and awesome skiing in the winter, swimming in the crystal clear lake in the summer and hiking all year round.

Besides, if you miss SF a bit, you can always pop to London for the weekend!

Please let us know anything you need - happy to help!

Bon Journee!

Kendal

I am from the US, and I live in Baar as well. It is a nice little community.

As the poster said above, Peace Foods has some comfort foods from
home. I like the club sandwich.

Make yourself known when you arrive!!

Re: San Francisco to Baar

Thank you everyone who responded to my original posting. It's nice to see that there are many friendly expats on this forum.

Kendall, we're going to Best Buy today to purchase the Slingbox and Slingcatcher to try them out at my parents' house. I'll have to make sure I leave them in a secure place when I leave in 10 days!!! WOW its all happening so fast now.

We are currently visiting my parents in Florida and it feels like Switzeland outside. The temp has been below freezing 6 consecutive days here in Jacksonville...getting prepared for the Swiss Winter I guess.

Thanks again everyone. Schoene Tag!!

Tony
