Moving To Luzern

Hello,

I am moving to Luzern to teach in the summer, I was just wondering if anyone could tell me what the area is like, what there is to do, where is the best place to meet new people, the usual kinds of things. I am in my late 20's and will be moving over by myself.

Also I have to commute to the school its it easy to commute in this area.

Thank you very much for any advice

Linzie

Re: Moving To Luzern

Luzern is an excellent town, beautiful area and plenty to do. I met many people just going out and about, but there are also expat hangouts where you'll be sure to meet english speakers, including Pickwicks, Legends, Anfield and the Roadhouse.

Don't know where you'll be teaching, but public transport is mostly excellent and you're pretty much bang in the middle of Switzerland with Bern, Basel and Zurich within easy reach.

Re: Moving To Luzern

I live in Luzern and it is an excellent place to be.

When I moved here I started a blog but then changed it to a photography blog but here you can read my impressions:

here you can see some nice nature shots of luzern too:

And I agree with the guy above - other places to go can be Bar 59 (chilled place), frigorex (if you like salsa), Penthouse (if you want a bit more posh).

Re: Moving To Luzern

Hi Linzie,
I live in Luzern with my boyfriend and we love it! He came from the states 2 years ago for his job and I joined him about a year now. The city is super charming and there is always something to do, tons of festivals and events. The lake has endless summer activities. The public transport is easy and the best way to get around. I'm around most days and would love to meet another new friend who speaks english so send me a pm when you get here. Would love to meet for coffee and chat. Good luck w/ the move. (little tip: it gets pretty warm here in the summer and with no Air-conditioning in any of the buildings you will want to invest in a fan as your first order of business).

take care,
Heather

Re: Moving To Luzern

Hey Linzie,
I think your school is located near Zug. Don't worry about transportation (boyfriend works in zug) about 20 minute train ride, goes direct with a couple stops btwn and the trains run every 30 mins.) Let me know if you have any other ?'s I'm around have time and don't mind helping the newbie..
Talk soon.
Heather.

The commute to Hünenberg from Luzern is really easy. 12 minutes or so.

There are lots of good places to hike in and around Lake Luzern. In
the winter, you can ski in Engelberg or Berner Oberland.

Re: Moving To Luzern

Hi Linz,

Hmm.. I think we might be teaching at the same school

I too am in my late 20s and came over to Luzern by myself. Luzern is a small city (which takes a bit of getting used to for some) but it's a great place- especially in summer. Beautiful lake, mountains, "beach" etc. Luzern also has a pretty good music/art etc. scene too. You can always find something to do here.
If you like, I can show you around when you get here.. and show you where all the cool bars and cafes are

I don't know if Penthouse deserves the term "Posh", that's not how I'd describe it...
