First week in Basel

.. And I've already attended a soccer game and stayed in the rain to celebrate victory afterwards downtown. People seem very nice though language barrier does not help.

About me: Moved for professional reasons from Mexico City, work in IT (SAP) and will be here for a very long time

I am in the process of finding an apartment (Never heard of having to apply for it as in some sort of contest for "tenant of the year "...) and tryng my best not to catch cold as temperature here is much lower than anticipated.

Looking forward to meet more expats and make new friends !!

Going to the movies, shopping and going to bars is not as fun when you're on your own...

Re: First week in Basel

Weclome - you'll do fine. Basel's full of stuff to do and people to meet.

Keep an eye on the calendar - Begga's usually organising something outdoors, there's a monthly-ish curry night arrangement (that I've yet to attend ) and the occasional drinks night organised.

Welcome to the forum!

There's a very lively - and welcoming - Basel crowd on EF, so I can't see your solitude lasting much longer.

Have fun!

Re: First week in Basel

Hello, welcome to Basel and to the English Forum!

This is the social part of the calendar mentioned by Carlos... we've been fairly active lately here in Basel.

The weather has proven a bit iffy for us and many have been in an outdoor mood, I'm thinking that's why this week doesn't look so active. Do keep an eye in that area of the forum though for things coming up.

The Curry Night that Carlos also mentioned is usually the first Wednesday of the month, on the other Wednesday there is a "regular" Wednesday Night Drinks which I believe are to be picking up again soon... location is All Bar One on Steinevorstadt.

There are a few other regular things such as the Running Club which meets twice weekly, the Book Club which meets once a month (this past Monday was the day this month) and *I believe* Karaoke is done the first Friday of the month at Mr.Pickwick (also on Steinevorstadt).

Meanwhile, if there is something you enjoy doing and don't see it listed, please feel free to post an event, you may find others who also are interested.

Re: First week in Basel

We have also a bike riding group. We meet for a 2-3hour ride Tuesday evening. If possible we also meet on Sunday morning for a ride.

Re: First week in Basel

Welcome to Basel and glad you enjoyed the football game. Weather is a bit on the cooler side but was in the mid 20s 2 weeks ago. Hope the hunt for an apartment goes well. It is as though they are giving you a favour to allow you to rent when in fact they should appreciate the business. One thing you will find is that Swiss customer service is fantastic

Re: First week in Basel

Dear all:
Thanks for all the friendly posts and loads of information.

I'm planning to attend some of those regular meetings, but will skip the cycling club since ...er.... well...I don't know how to ride a bike .
Come to think of it, anyone riding a bike in my home city would be putting his/her life at risk.

So, will be more than happy to join book club, photography and nights out . Even more now that weather has slightly improved.

Cheers,
