Hello Bern, meet Bern.

Hey Everyone,

Almost 3 years ago I met a Swiss girl in Portugal while traveling around Europe, now I find myself living in Bern. Crazy.

We moved into our place on Monbijoustrasse a couple of weeks ago, a week later I was off to Sweden to go nuts with my best friends, now I'm back and need to get down to business.

I'm a 24 year old Canadian, born in Poland so I hold a valid EU passport. I'm hoping this will help in accomplishing the tasks ahead of me.

I'm heavily into snowboarding, travel, photography, design, surfing, eating...and other things along those lines. I speak English and Polish, and understand a little bit of French. Swiss German terrifies me.

I'm a freelance interactive designer and photographer. What else...
Here are some of my photos for a peak into my life:
http://flickr.com/photos/bernk/sets/

I'm also on Facebook, yep I got sucked in like everyone else...

Any other young-ish people living in Bern on here? Drop me a line. I have tons of time to do stuff.

I would love to meet people, especially in my industry (designers, developers, photographers, etc.)

Tschüss,
Bern

Bern baby Bern.

Poland isn't considered an EU passport in the greater scheme of things - yet.

Well that sucks
Any idea when, or where I can get more info on this? I was under the impression that it was since half of Poland is now working in London.

Re: Hello Bern, meet Bern.

ah, EU would be fine. Switzerland is permitted a two-fold opening of rights to EU members - the original 15 and the next 10. So the new EU member states have a few years to wait until easy street descends upon them.

Also, does anyone know any good language schools in Bern for German...or even Swiss German?
Is it crazy to try learning Swiss German with having no German background?

Australia is an awesome place. I can't wait to go back and do a massive 4x4 trip.

What are you studying in Fribourg?

Hey Bernk, You have quite a history, welcome to the forum. I'm also interested in photography, you should come to the TramDepot this weekend (Look at the Calender).

Re: Hello Bern, meet Bern.

"youngish"? hee hee hee... well, that depends on what you mean. I'm 40 now, have a son and feel I've aged overnight
I've been in Bern since February (moved here from San Francisco, California). My wife is German; she got a job here.
I'm now looking for a job, have been learning (or attempting to learn) German, and it's certainly a challenge (I speak English and Spanish fluently). I did look through various schools and the "most affordable" is Migros Klubschule.
If I'm not commuting to Zürich or Firbourg for interviews, I'm usually here in Bern, sifting through Internet pages looking for jobs... and getting my groceries in the afternoon.

I'll take this opportunity and introduce myself to the forum - which I have not done so far.

Long story made short: I am a mexican who happened to be born in the US. Lived in Mexico City through the end of my University Degree (Computer Sys Engineering) and then moved to Austin, Texas, where I stayed until 2000. Then, I moved to San Francisco (and various places around there, including Santa Cruz and San Carlos). Married my then-girlfriend (German), who then got her PhD from the UniFreiburg (in Germany), had a kid in 2005 and now we're here.

Hello everyone! and thanks for creating (and maintaining) this site!

Alejandro

Re: Hello Bern, meet Bern.

Hi-

I was happy to find this site and wanted to introduce myself.

My husband and I moved to Bern from the U.S. ~10 days ago. We'll be living here for about a year (as yet undetermined). Sadly, like many Americans, we both speak only English fluently.

My husband will be heading to work within the week and I'll be stuck finding other things to do...I feel like I need to put some time into learning German...but not sure how useful it will be...

We're in our mid 30's and like to spend much of our free time ouside..to include a fair amount of rock/ice climbing. We appreciate good beer (miss the microbrews from home) and wine.

Jen

Since '99. Ahhh sunny Vancouver, I heard you had your first white xmas last year. You'll find more snow here! I miss the -35°C and the wind chill.

Re: Hello Bern, meet Bern.

Learn High German and then after you've gotten the basics maybe try to learn Swiss german. The Swiss germans do after all read in high german.

Add: Errrr, sorry. Welcome to Switzerland. Hope you love it as much as I do.

Hi BernK, Welcome to Bern!
If you miss Polish/Canadian beers, you can get them in the World of Beers in the train station across from the migros, first floor. Just a tip if you don't know it already!Enjoy Bern

Re: Hello Bern, meet Bern.

Welcome to the Forum from another western Canucklehead (Alberta, though). I'm about an hour and a half south of you in Brig. Just spend some time with the language...it'll come...that's what I'm told anyway.

Enjoy
