Looking to make some friends

Hello, I have been in Switzerland for about 8 weeks now in the Lupfig area and I'm finding it hard to make friends. My 15 year old son and I moved here from Vancouver Washington to start a new life and we love it here but its not easy getting to know people when you don't speak the language. My son attends school in Turgi, they offer a integration class to help him learn German. but even he is having a hard time in the friend department as the school is not in our village. If anyone is interested in chatting or coffee and looking for some English speaking friends please drop us a line. Cheers Kylie

Re: Looking to make some friends

Welcome to CH and to the forum. There are plenty of examples in the forum of people going through the same adjustment period you and your son seem to be going through. In my experience, 8 weeks is still very early in the transition process so hang in there!
If the school has an integration program for non-German speakers I would think there is a very good chance that there are other expats in your community. In Basel not all schools offer an integration program. That may be a good place to start making friends and they may also be a good resource during your transition.
Good luck!

Re: Looking to make some friends

Thank you for the good advise and best wishes. The school is good for him but we live in Lupfig and the school is in Turgi close to Baden so he's not meeting any kids in our neighborhood and also the ages of the kids in his class are from 12 to 15, hes the oldest and they only one from the USA. All all the kids are learning German together however he is the only one who speaks English. Since the kids have the 2 week off for vacation it would be great to meet some people in the lupfig, Brugg area. Mason loves playing his xbox and likes to shoot hoops and toss a football. I would just like something to do.

Pop into your local community centre - Gemeindschaftszentrum - and see what activities are planned. There are often 'yoof' oriented activities and it may help for each of you to do something without the other from time to time.

Maybe a sports club would be of interest?

Re: Looking to make some friends

Welcome to the EF, another good way to make friends would be to maybe join some classes? I know I made some friends that way Or you could join one of EF's social events.

Best of luck!

Re: Looking to make some friends

Yes, Lupfig, canton Aargau, quite the centre of the universe isn't it? We lived not too far from there for eleven years. 'But everybody knows that' was the answer to an innocent question or my plea that it might be useful if the parents knew before 5 p.m. one evening that the children had no school the following day.. unfortunately everybody did know except three Mums, one of whom was me. And it wasn't because we didn't understand the language but simply because we hadn't grown up in that part of the canton. It was a bit daunting but things improved in time.

There are loads of clubs in Lupfig and region. Have a look and see if there is something you might be able to join in with. Helping at a Bazaar was, for me, one way of getting to know people and to be recognised by the 'natives'. The language is certainly a problem to begin with - be prepared to laugh at your own mistakes - but most people will try to help you out if they see that you are trying to communicate.

Good luck and wave at Schloss Brunegg for me.

I know the integration classes, I replied when you posted earlier seeking advice.
Need info on relocating w/high school aged child.

Integration classes are not offered locally for a child his age, and I knew your son would be one of the oldest. It makes for a lonely experience. I am not surprised there are no English speaking kids in the Turgi class, they would likely be in Baden, if at all. At age 15, most parents just don't choose this option.
For kids school is not just about learning but also about fitting in.

Clubs are okay if you can find something that appeals to Mason and age appropriate.

The Kanton of Aargau has sports programs that might be of interest.

The link is in German but I recall your boyfriend is Swiss, so surely he can do the research for you.
