From London to Schaffhausen in January.....Hello im new

Hello all,

Im moving to Schaffhausen with my wife and two young daughters in January. We are English speaking only at the moment and are intending to send our daughters to local schools, not sure where, as our relocation company are sourcing apartments for us at the moment. Any advice on this would be much appreciated. Our daughters are aged 7 years and 8 months. Also is there much of an expat community in schaffhausen, it would be good to get some local intel when we get there.

Cheers James.

There is enough of an international community for Shaffhaussen to have a small International School. The one mostly expat social group that I have had involvement with is the Shaffhaussen hash House harriers, who meet on friday evenings for a run, a drink and a meal. - a friendly, light hearted group of people.

Welcome to the forum, welcome to Switzerland, and welcome to Schaffhausen (not living there but grandmum lived there, we often were there on lengthy visits and I now live on Schaffhauserstrasse). Schaffhausen may have the size of Paddington-Bayswater, but is far more beautiful. Not only has Schaffhausen a sizeable expat community, but it by train is less then an hour away from Zurich-downtown.

watch out here in the forum about events also in that town, as well as in Winterthur (30mins away) and in Zürich (50mins away) !

Welcome in advance

Regarding where to live, like anywhere there are good and not so good areas. If you're planning on living in Schaffhausen town (rather than the smaller towns and villages in the canton) I'd recommend the areas of Buchthalen, Emmersberg or Breite (but not Nord Breite). You could also consider living in Feuerthalen, which is a smaller town just across the Rhein - as it's in Canton Zurich, the taxes are lower, though rent will be a bit higher. I'm sure others will have suggestions too.

Re: From London to Schaffhausen in January.....Hello im new

hi james

and welcome to our neck of the woods.

schaffhausen and the surrounding area is absolutely beautiful and we have a large expats community. there are many big english speaking firms here and a large group of americans coming next year too. in addition to the hash harriers there is another group of expats that meet every friday evening at zaks bar in the town too.

housing in schaffhausen can be difficult to find depending on what you are looking for but dont discount the outlying towns too like fuerthalen, flurlingen, dachsen etc. they are very close to town and have good schools and (i can only speak for dachsen) we have quite an international mix of people too.we also have a train station so getting to the bigger places like winterthur and zurich is very easy.

if you want any further info etc send me a pm, if i can help i will or i may know someone who can help you.....thats how we survived the first few months

Hi All!
So cool that so many people are coming to Schaffhausen! I am also going to relocate there in about a month or so.

I have just been in through the house hunting process and the agency that helped me was great. We had some really nice options to choose from, both in town and a bit outside (charm compensates distance).

I hear that the expat community is quite lively and active, I cannot wait to try this out by myself and I will report back!

Good luck with the move!
ValeC
