The best portable split air conditioner 1 year old 8003 Zurich CHF 530

First class SPLIT air conditioner. The condensing unit goes outside and the evaporator unit goes inside. This is much more efficient and capable than a "one box" system. A 3 m umbilical connects the two

This was used briefly last summer and was absolutely fantastic. 10,000 BTU which is massive. Brilliant overkill for a 2 bedroom apartment!

  • Novamatic CL990 Split
  • Cost CHF 2k new in FUST.
  • Supplied with all original accessories (remote control, brackets)
  • Also supplied with a roof-mount bracket I made for my installation (out of a velux window) if you want it.
  • Includes window surround and a roll of velcro tape

If you know what this is you will recognise this as a bargain. For sale because I am moving to a ground floor apartment built into the hillside. It's not going to be as hot as my attic apartment.

I think you are exaggerating the size of the unit, it's suitable for a room about 25m2. In a warmer climate I use 9k units for a normal bedroom, 18k in a normal kitchen or small office. I have 72,000 BTU of air con in a 129m2 apartment in Malta, thats 7 times the cooling power of your unit.

Well thanks for your contribution to my "for sale" thread. Your place in Cyprus sounds lovely(!) Pat yourself on the back.

This is the highest output portable split system available to buy. A portable split system being the most optimal in power and noise of any portable system.

For the normal person in Zurich and not in Cyprus wanting aircon for their apartment this is literally the single best product on sale not requiring holes in walls and planning permission for a commercial system.

Re: The best portable split air conditioner 1 year old 8003 Zurich CHF 530

BTU - British Thermal Unit - how quaint.
In this context, BTU is an abbreviation for BTU/h and is a measure of power. For an air conditioner, this is the heat transfer power and not the electrical input power (which should be somewhat less, depending on the efficiency of the device and the relative temperatures etc.).
1kW is about 3400 BTUs so a 10,000 BTU rated air conditioner is around 3kW and 72,000 BTU device is a massive 21kW.

The latest A++ units seem to use less electricity than you state, substantially less on average per hour. The 18,000 BTU units are connected on a fused spur with a 13 amp fuse, which would imply peak power draw is less than half of what you state.

This is the distinction between electrical energy in (to drive the compressor) and heat energy transferred (from the apartment to the outside air). Maybe I didn't make it clear.

It is like this. You could have an electrically powered wheelbarrow. In it you could transport red hot glowing pig iron. The amount of heat energy you could transfer with this per hour would dwarf the electrical energy required to power the wheelbarrow over the same period.

In a heat pump (air conditioner) it is the heat transfer which is rated (in BTU/hr) and not the electrical power supplied to the compressor (kW). The ratio between these two powers is the coefficient of performance (COP).

An 18,000 BTU/h rated air conditioner that requires a 13A (250v) connection has a (minimum) COP of about 1.6

I had one of these. It's not the best unit out there but most probably the best, at least for the price, available in Switzerland because there is very little choice.

The split units are way better than the single air hose ones and I wouldn't have anything else.
