Curtains Needed

I see this topic has been discussed a number of times with no real conclusion.
I'm looking for short (160cm) blackout curtains.

Does anyone know when it's possible to get something like this? It seems like the conclusion is you have to have them altered or do it yourself?

Is this truly the case?

Thanks for your help!

Re: Curtains Needed

Hi
When you say "blackout curtains" can you please say what you mean exactly? Do you want the curtains to be lined with black material? Or is the double thickness [curtain and lining in off-white] sufficient?
Have quite a number of curtains, but of course, we are in France. Could post them to you from CH though, as we are only 15 kms from the border.

Re: Curtains Needed

There`s a fabric shop in Kaiserstuhl that has a vast selection of curtaining fabric, including "black-out" in many colors (when closed makes the room dark). They also sew the curtains for customers.

You give them the exact size of the window measurement (or area to be covered - length/breadth) and they work out how much fabric you need.

If you`re interested pm me and I`ll find their business card and give details.

Re: Curtains Needed

I needed some too, as youngest is apprentice as baker confectioner......they were way too expensive for my budget

I found them at Hornbach, scroll down to where it says "DIM OUT STOFF", those are the colours available there.
Ok too long for your requirements, a piece is 140cm wide and 250cm long and covers one standard window. But it is easy to shorten them yourself.

http://www.hornbach.ch/shop/Innendek...x0ZXJzIjpbXX0=

For my daughter we ended up fastening (clip on) darkening rollo blinds (sp?) from Jumbo, and now I prefer them, they darken the room really good during day time and when she is not around we just roll them up and they need less space than a darkening curtain would.

EDIT: I think the blinds I am talking about, may also be sold with a line saying thermo blocking or something similar, the ones to look for have on the outside a silvery lining, so they also help reducing the heat in a room, especially if like here, you get full frontal whack of the sun during a few hours of the day.

Re: Curtains Needed

You can also look at www.bonprix.ch

Just be aware that 'verdunkelung' means darker, but not necessarily 'blockout' and they also use the term 'blickdicht' and that might be closer to blockout.

I got second-hand curtains from the second hand shop 'brocki-land' in zurich, but just by luck...they have a lot of very old curtains...sometimes they have good ones that just need a decent wash...1960's and 70's styling! - and added a blockout curtain from Ikea, but even the Ikea 'blockout' are not 100%.

'Stofftrucke' in Zurich sell the fabric, but it's very expensive...

You can also try Manor, Micasa, Coop City, for custom-made curtains...very pricey!

It's easy enough to get ironing tape from Ikea, Migros, Coop, so you can shorten them by just ironing them and the ironing tape works like glue...

Re: Curtains Needed

Hi,

I have 2 panels of floral curtains (with black lining). Dimensions are 147cm wide and 166 cm high each panel.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/769519...57668972059045

They are in excellent condition. Washed and ironed. $30 for 2 panels.

Let me know if you are interested.

Cheers,
Tracey

I'd expect the vendor to offer adapting them to any specified size. For a fee usually, but that should be fairly low. Did you check the typical suspects, like, Ikea Hornbach Jumbo Migros Coop etc?

Re: Curtains Needed

Hi everyone,

Thanks so much for your help and suggestions!
I checked Ikea immediately but I find that it's next to impossible to get any help there and would require self-hemming.

I'll definitely have to go to Manor, Jumbo, etc. and see what they have.

Appreciate the various offers - the curtains will need to be a neutral colour as they are for a man.

And when I say "black out", I just mean that they block the light from outside.

Re: Curtains Needed

Hi -

Re-opening this post, can anyone suggest somewhere to get some curtains around Zurich that don't cost and arm and a leg.

I need them custom sized and me doing any sort of altering myself is not an option, I'm terrible at anything like that.

Re: Curtains Needed

I ended up buying one set of curtains at Micasa and one at Ikea.
I think the Ikea ones were about 80CHF for two curtains and then I had the seamstress across the street from me in Seefeld shorten them. I believe she charged 20CHF per curtain.

Cheap at a custom length is pretty much impossible but this method wasn't overly expensive either.

Re: Curtains Needed

I am happy to help with alterations but it's not difficult - they sometimes come with ironing tape so you basically line them up, fold them and iron them to the length you want - the ironing tape turns to glue and 'voila'...

I got our last set from 'bonprix.ch' - they are green, were super-cheap (in their discount section and actually the green turned out not bad...

How 'custom' is your custom size ? ??

Not very 'custom' at all. I think Ill go ahead and buy normal size curtains and just have them shortened. I want the length to be 140 cm the width of the window itself is 160 so for width I'd like somewhere around 190-200 but I want to put two in one window.

If I go ahead and buy curtains that fit on the tracks, do you by any chance know the name of these in German? Are they the curtains that are with the Faltenband or is this the Kräuslband? I just looked at bonprix.ch and they have some inexpensive options that can work! Thanks for that.

Re: Curtains Needed

Curtains and fabric in general are very expensive here! I was shocked when i first went shopping for some 2 years ago.
From time to time I visit brokenhaus and go through their selections. Worth visiting these in smaller towns, not just in Zurich (or whatever major town you are based in).

Please note that i found cheap Manor single-layer curtains very effective in keeping the light and summer heat out. Would be cheaper than lined curtains i presume as well...

oh, and from own experience, if you got polyester sun blocking curtains, first hang them up, then trim them to desired length. Polyester is not the best of fabrics when it comes to keeping it's form, but it's the only cheap alternative unfortunately.

Re: Curtains Needed

'kreuselband' gathers and 'faltenband' I think makes pleats.

Whichever (you don't want 'osen' those are holes)...

You need 'fixings' to put them into the track. The tracks are standard. I have found two sizes though...so might be good to either find one that already fits your track (ask a neighbour!) or buy a pack first then double check.

These are super-easy to put in because they have a sharp pin section that you push through the band on the curtain, then simply slide the square part onto the track...
https://www.bonprix.ch/produkt/gardi...-956013/#image

You'll also need 'stoppers' - you put them in once the curtain is in... bon prix doesn't seem to sell them but they usually have them in the curtain section of manor or coop city...

Seems a silly query, go to a curtain shop, Pfister, Manor or a host of places that sell curtains
