English help on master thesis

Dear all,

I am writing my master thesis in English at the university in Switzerland. I need some help on the grammar. Could someone help and proofread? Ideally in about two week. I am located in Bern and would love to invite you for some good Chinese food.

Proofreading a thesis and correcting someone's grammar also inevitably involves re-writing and re-structuring things, especially if the persons level of English is not very good to start with. You are asking random strangers to spend literally hours of their time, for free, to help you write a thesis that you should be doing by yourself.

Not only is it an unreasonable request, but you didn't even say 'please' once in your post.

Re: English help on master thesis

I appreciate that you don't have much money as a student. This is where building a network of friends and offering help to them too is essential. As much as I like to do things to help people, you are not only giving an extremely short turnaround time to read an entire thesis properly, you want it for essentially nothing.

Proof-reading an academic paper involves understanding the formal rules applicable in your case as well as noticing where you may have forgotten to cite properly etc. We are talking about several days' work - that's what it took my mam to correct my thesis and I am a native level English speaker.

I must admit, my first thought when seeing this was "Isn't that cheating"?

I mean, I don't know exactly what a Masters in English entails, but I would have expected that it would at the very least require demonstration of a good command of English grammar.

I think it's only regarded as cheating if it is proofreading the content and not just the spelling and grammar. However, in my experience of proofreading for people it is almost impossible to proofread something as long as a dissertation without fundamentally changing and restructuring things, especially for whom English is a second language. It's a hell of a lot of work, and for something like a dissertation often requires dedicated subject knowledge to know how to even re-structure the sentences.

Anyway whatever, if someone really has nothing better to do and wants to do it for them for free then fine... *shrugs*

Re: English help on master thesis

Well, maybe the thesis contains amazing top secret research results!

Then, maybe just maybe it's only proofreading the English abstract?

Or it's a team effort and the thesis is super short?

Ok, yeah - it was me who moved it to "Job offered", it needs to be here.

Maybe somebody will help out a student in need.

I took it more that the OP has written their Masters thesis in English -- not that it involves a Masters in English. There are a lot of grad programs here in CH where the main language is English. A friend of mine is a professor of Astrophysics at Zurich Uni and all his classes are taught in English (he doesn't speak German). He also has to oversee their theses and dissertations, etc.

Re: English help on master thesis

Yoyo,

Do you have permission to have your thesis edited prior to being submitted?

Also, what is the title of your thesis, if you don't mind sharing? That may help someone know if they're interested in reading (and editing) it.

Yeah and posting the title will also give it away to any of the software tools that checks for cheating... or simply a professor doing a google.

I wrote mine in English to avoid the dreaded gender neutral language shambles that you have in German and so my mam could proof-read it. Nobody else in their right mind would have put up with my ADD disaster zone thesis writing...

There's proofreading then there's proofreading. Something can be grammatically correct without necessarily being the way it should/would be written. It can be a can of worms. If it were just a couple of pages I'd look at it for you.

? I am writing my master's thesis at the university in Switzerland in English and I ...

? "at university in Switzerland"

? "at a university in Switzerland"
? "at the University of X in Switzerland"
? "at the University of Switzerland"
? "two weeks time."

Best? Nest what? No-one should sign off with "Best", in my opinion.

Re: English help on master thesis

last time I read a masters thesis for someone it was business/marketing, and we did two rounds of editing and feedback. About 5000 words and I charged the student a very minimal 300chf.

If it's arts, humanities, economics, community development, marketing or business, I can read it for you. Send me a PM.

Thanks for taking time correcting my grammar and offering your opinion. I appreciate your opinion. however I have seen plenty "best" going around not just from me.

What goes around is not always correct :-)

Re: English help on master thesis

Thanks you for your immediate replies which I was for sure not expecting. I was instructed by the tutor to get my thesis proofread so I hope this doesn't count as cheating. It should be purely grammar proofreading. My thesis topic is about Breastfeeding and Child Morbidity. I would really appreciate it if someone can help out.

This thread is a good example of how when someone relatively new posts a thread here, they are often needlessly attacked and criticized.

Yoyo... Good luck with your thesis. x

I don't think a "please" is at all necessary. You already make an offer of your appreciation in the form of a meal. Often posts from some other nationalities come across as demanding but yours doesn't at all.
