What (lower-realm) salary can an IT specialist expect?

I'm working with a colleague who wants to re-enter his field of work again in IT. He is a bit lost as he has been part of a start-up for the last 3-4 years and feels out-of-touch with the industry where he was very successful working before for companies like Siemens, Phillips and Ascom.

He has stated that he would be prepared to start on a project-based type of assignment or with an agency on short-term contracts and could start immediately (the reason he isn't going for silly money).

He's not after a big bumper salary (rare on here I know ) and is prepared to work 50% or more depending on position.

His languages are native (Swiss) German and fluent written and spoken English. he is in his early 40s.

Languages: Assembly (x86, MIPS and MSP430), C, C#, C++, Java, VHDL, Visual Basic

Operating Systems: Windows, Linux, Solaris, AIX, UNIX
Databases and RDMS: MS SQL Server, MS Access, MySQL, PostgreSQL, IBM U2 Database (Hira)

Integrated development environment:MS Visual Studio, IntelliJ IDEA, Eclipse, NetBeans, Xilinx ISE,

Programs: Excel, Matlab, Maple, Mathematica, LabView, Enterprise Architect, NSIS, Altova MapForce, MS Office, OpenOffice, ClearCase, Subversion, CVS, LaTeX, Photoshop, FrameMaker.

I am not an agent (hence why I have no idea about his skillset), just want to help him. Any pointer in the right direction agency/employment-wise would be greatly appreciated.

Re: What (lower-realm) salary can an IT specialist expect?

Your friend’s profile closely describes my profile in terms of SW design skills plus HW design skills. Also in late 40’s and not after bumper salary.

If he looks on LinkedIn in job section there are plenty of opportunities out there. Consulting is the best option, in my opinion, as he can work part time with flexible working hours.

How is your friend doing now? I have similar situation to him. I was exhausted by my recent startup. I'm not going for silly money too and would like to take it easy. Neither would I like to go back to Google. Friends still contact me for their projects but I felt tired of startup + silly money.

Silly = too much work which does not bring happiness || hard to be motivated.

I'm thinking of using my skills to actually bring people utility or happiness, not working any more for investors, charts, plans.

@Hausamsee, I would be happy to chat with your friend, if he feels like. In Google there is a concept called a role sharing, where two people share one job. I feel that is one possibility I take it easy by starting again at Google.
