I am quite excited about this :

And the premise sounds awesome too.
I was unaware of this game--in specific detail.

It's gonna be a tough upcoming gaming quarter:

Arkham City, Mass Effect 3, SKYRIM, Modern Warfare 3, Battlefield 3....no skiing for me this season, I'm not even finished the last big release games.

Not entirely sure TBH - I believe it is xbox360 - I could try and get some more details.
Cool....if its XBLA, then I can download as soon as it is available and give him some feedback.

Prototype was cool enough. In some ways better than infamous...in other ways not.
And this one sounds promising.

MW3 and Battlefield3 should be really cool as well.
The info so far has been quite engrossing.

And me too about the time for games. I have a lot of non-finished games which I would like to finish before getting the new ones. But the time man...not enough time.

personally, the FPS are going to be filler for me...Skyrim is the one I've been eagarly waiting for a good 4 years. Was very impressed by ME2, so 3 sounds promising too---I like the idea that they continue your saved game and the story of ME3 is based on decisions you made in ME2

FPS is always a filler once the main story is done. Then its just a n00bstomp online
I am actually playing Titan Quest on the pc these days which is eating up a lot of time. I know its an old game but I only found it recently and its a good warm up until Diablo 3 comes out.

And a few other arcade titles on XBLA which are also proving to be worth every MS point spent.

And continuing save games is a cool idea. But I never really got the hang of ME.

Re: How to annoy a nerd

Much after Duke I gave up on the FPS. I played a bit of Quake and Goldeneye - but that was about it. I'm an addict for the GT series - although I don't have the patience or addition level to go online. AOE3 sucked the life out of me on that front.

(Talking of which - I installed the Napolean Era - which is a great add-on pack - but uninstalling means I need to do a complete reinstall - and I can't find my registration codes )

Currently, FM2005 takes up PC time, iWeb/Movie/etc takes up iMac/Air time and GT5 on the PS3. And in no way is the PS3 hooked up to the Fatman/Misson 731 speaker combo . Nor do I have 4 screens on my desk

And in no way were 3 of those running last night

AOE is a brilliant brilliant game. I started with AOE 1 and played through all until the latest one some years ago. And loved every minute of it. My only qualm is that they did not make an AOE4.

I destroyed a lot of my installations like this with mods. Particulary painful was losing a lot of my characters on Diablo once I installed a mod to the game. That still gives me the shivers.

The Napolean Era add-on was a good jumping off point for AOE4 - with some very interesting civilisations - the Swiss were might against the computer - with some seriously scary (and effective) infantry (mobile, strong, fast, destructive).

Any future AOE would have to replicate a time already covered by the previous games - as Battlegrounds (Star-Wars) showed it doesn't always translate so well into the present/future.

The one thing it lacked (IMHO) was good terrain modifiers - but AOE3 was a quantum leap when you look at the combat model. Terrain didn't have the movement/defence/attack/strategic values that it should have had.

If I was modelling AOE4 i'd look a more flow like advance system - so that points are accrued over time for economic/military/population advances - once the points reach a certain point it unlocks bonuses - and more civilisation specific bonuses.

The mechanics of the RTS are very interesting - in a nerdy way

There was a little taste of the swiss civilization already as mercenaries in the stock AOE3. And they were quite powerful and costly units (no pun intended ).

Not necessarily. At the time when AOE came out, there were already games out there which were dealing with the same time period. But they lacked a lot of things which AoE excelled in. I guess if they did decide to make AoE (although I don't know who would since Ensemble does not exist anymore )

Agree to an extent. Even from the first AoE, terrain played a big part in actual battles. Although one might argue that this was not really terrain but strategies.
Units on higher ground did more damage to units on lower ground and so on. Although very basic, this did pave the way into more advanced terrain models in AoE2 and further...which were picked up by other games.

This was somehow a part of AoE3. Based on how well you were doing, you could get bonuses based on economy / military / population.

RTS has been, and will continue to be, one of my favorite genres, simply due to the fact that its not just point and shoot. It teaches you a lot in areas which are very useful IRL. Resourcing, Technological decisions, strategies, forward thinking, lateral thinking, balancing...are just some of them.
