Memory... are yes, where did I put that glass of water?

This Homeopathy lark is supposed to work on animals too, but I never saw any published evidence.

Re: Important new information regarding vaccines and homeopathy

Oh no, another homeopathy thread.

Yet again, some smart guy has wasted heaps of research money working out that a placebo is, eh, a placebo, and now expects the rest of us to kiss his feet for that sweeping display of intellectual superiority.

One day they will grow up and realize that placebos do have a part to play in curing people, but in the meantime they're having a fun time destroying placebos by telling people they don't work.

In the other news, big pharma has spent x billion proving that Santa Claus isn't real, and will shortly be railing against primary school teachers who say otherwise.

And by the way, Swiss tv won't go broke if you don't pay Billag, and George Lucas won't go hungry if you download movies. But we'll leave that for later. Sometimes half truths can be useful after all.

I very much doubt that Paddy G spent millions on looking for information, we are not talking about placebos here...Also, who makes these 'homeopathic remedies'? are they for free? If so then yes, pharma is evil

The important thing with homoeopathy (apart from correctly spelling it) is to keep an open mind. Unfortunately, most proponents don't.

Homeopathic tinctures are a placebo. All this story about dilutions and water remembering things is part of the placebo in providing some sort of explanation that might satisfy some of the people who are a bit curious but maybe not curious enough to dig deeper. So on the whole it's a great story that has taken years to build up, and as a placebo it is pretty effective. I am of course talking about homeopathy as prescribed by serious medical doctors. Homeopathy as sold by quacks is different.

Why should placebos be free? Wouldnt that be contrary to the whole illusion of it actually having value?

Those of us who are a bit smarter could maybe prove that we are a bit smarter by not banging on the drum too loudly. Otherwise it really seems as if they are only a tiny bit smarter than those who don't get it, but not smart enough to get the bigger picture.

Re: Important new information regarding vaccines and homeopathy

Being as science has unable to prove that homeopathy doesn't work - nor in fact have any idea how placebos work - I wouldn't rule anything out!

For example, in trials, people given a pill and told it was a placebo and that it wouldn't do anything for them, have seen their condition improve.

I saw an amazing documentary a few months ago on the fascinating powers of placebos. It's incredibly effective, in ways science doesn't fully understand yet. Actually, placebo seem to be effective even if you know you're taking one!

Pray tell me, in what way do placebos not reduce health costs? Methinks there's a little tick missing on that list.

Sorry, to spoil your rage. But it is in fact well known that placebos work. Nothing new here. Surprisingly (maybee to you but not to me), they can even work in a bad and unexpected way. In the scientific community it is known as nocebo effect.

For example, in trials, people given a pill and told it was a placebo and that it wouldn't do anything for them, have seen their condition improve.
But did their conditions improve if they weren't told they were getting a placebo, or indeed anything?

i.e. Blind trials are more convincing to test a drug's efficacy.

But the affect of a placebo has been shown to be quite effective which tells us more about the human body and mind than it does about a glass of water.

I wonder if there is a placebo for understanding irony.
