Re: Why we love the Daily Mail

Can we include The Sun? I read their website daily to keep in touch with my Britishness.

Re: Why we love the Daily Mail

unfortunately daily mail readers don't know what a load of BS that comic is. I have to confess my mother reads the daily wail and spouts off about all the bloody immigrants etc totally blind to the irony as she's sitting in my living room

Do you think EVERY Daily Mail reader is regarding it as satire? That's more of a presumption I think.
Who said anything about "satire"? The Daily Mail is simply funny. Most people I know who read the Daily Mail read it because it is funny. You get a bit of news, a bit of celebrity gossip, and a bit of columnist trollery, all wrapped up in more humour than the Times, the Guardian, the Telegraph and the Independent could manage in a fortnight.

Have you ever actually read the Mail? Just follow the link I provided in the first post, or the one about the nutter with the overgrown garden. It's hilarious, and all its contributors do it on purpose. The overwhelming majority of people I have ever known who read the Mail read it because it is very entertaining.

As for snobbery and intellectual arrogance, I don't think I've crtiticised the Daily Mail on those grounds.
No, but you have insulted the thousands of people who read it by presuming that they are too stupid to "get the joke" as you put it. Such a shame they didn't get to study Swift at University, isn't it? Then they'd understand proper "satire", wouldn't they?

Quote:
Ask yourself - was it funny when they published support for the Blackshirts?
And how many thousand years ago was that?

In my opinion, the broadsheets I listed above are far more dangerous than the Daily Mail could ever be, because people actually take them seriously. More fool them, I say.

Anyway, this is a Jokes and Funnies thread. If you want to indulge in a spot of po-faced pontification on the subject of how thick the lower middle classes are, please feel free to start a thread on it.
