What language should I learn?

I will be moving to Lugano Switzerland to go to college and was wondering if which language is most convenient to learn; French, German or Italian?

Thanks!

1. define convinient (for you, for the locals, for girls, for literature?)
2. said college's language
3. language of people you want to hang out with
4. local language is diglossy Italian/tecinese dialects

... what ever you can handle.

Re: What language should I learn?

I think you should learn Italian. Besides it being the language of your canton, it's also a beautiful language. You're also more likely to spend your free time in Milan than in Geneve or Zurich.

I'd like to suggest (respectfully, of course) that you research a little (a little more than asking a bunch of people on a forum) before packing up and moving across the world.

Try starting here.

I'm hoping you've already looked into getting the appropriate visa? If you're not a Swiss citizen, you'll need one. And some Swiss dollars. And some fresh underwear (you can't buy underpants in Switzerland).

The ONLY language spoken here is Italian!

Why even ask this?

Or perhaps not.

They really should specify.

Re: What language should I learn?

Of course it makes more sense to learn Italian, since you´ll be living in Lugano.

If I were you, I would try to learn Italian first, after a few years French (since it´s quite similar) and if you really like Switzerland so much and decide to spend the rest of your life here, it would be nice to learn German too eventually ;-)
