Er hat schon zwei kleine Bier getrunken (why not kleinen)?

Hallo everyone,

I am revising some german basic grammar and the Adjektivdeklination is still sometimes troubling me.

Would someone kindly tell me in this following sentence:

Er hat schon zwei klein( ) Bier getrunken.
The adjective klein is for the plural akkusativ Bier but how come it is not klein(en) but is klein(e)?

Am I missing something here?

Thanks in advance.

Edit: I think I have found the answer here:http://www.deutsch-lernen.com/learn-...ination_II.htm

Da der unbestimmte Artikel (ein, eine, ein) im Plural nicht existiert, wird das Adjektiv dann wie bei der Deklination ohne Artikelwort dekliniert. Diese Deklination wird auch nach Wörtern wie viele oder undeklinierten Zahlwörtern (zwei) angewandt, das Adjektiv bekommt zumeist die Endung des fehlenden bestimmten Artikels.

Am I right? Thanks for reading.

Well.."klein" is your only adjective because the number doesn't count. (har, har) Plural accusative objects accept feminine endings.

Er hat zwei kleine Biere getrunken.

If there was a second adjective (two small, dark beers) then we worry about multiple endings. As I understand it anyway..

Deklination mit dem unbestimmten Artikel

singular/neutral
Nom. ein kleines Kind/Bier
Akk. ein kleines Kind
Dat. einem kleinen Kind
Gen. eines kleinen Kindes

plural/neutral
Nom. kleine Kinder/zwei kleine Bier
Akk. kleine Kinder
Dat. kleinen Kindern
Gen. kleiner Kinder

Re: Er hat schon zwei kleine Bier getrunken (why not kleinen)?

There are two different things:

- There is a determinant/article in front, in your sentence: zwei.
- The questions is: Does it have the needed ending matching Gender/case?
- When not (here because it is a number where one can not add an ending), then the normal ending goes over to the adjective if there is one. - If several adjectives, they all take the same ending, for order and clarity's sake.
- If yes, the normal ending is on the determainant/article (eine, dem, jener, dieses...) then the adjective take a "fill-in" ending just to fill in the blanc.
- There are three cases where ein does not take an ending even though it logically should (Masculin Nominative, Neuter Nominative, Neuter Accusative). The normal ending jumps over to the adjective if there is one.

Therefore:
RED: normal ending matching Gender/Case
GREEN: Fill-in ending
Der rote Hut steht mir gut
Ein roter Hut würde dir gut stehen
Drei kleine Kinder haben sich im Supermarkt verlaufen
Mit meinem neuen Nachbarn verstehe ich mich gut.
