love quotes or short poems in german

This is inspired by the "translation of german jokes" thread.

Mind sharing some romantic quotations in german and with translation? Somehow i think this would be better than just an english quote translated into german. Im working on my wedding vow so i could use some but also just to know some sweet lines to tell our german speaking OH.

Thank you all.

Re: love quotes or short poems in german

Since you also asked for poems...I received the following poem a little while back, and it melted my heart.
Many congratulations on your wedding

Original
DANN
... Dann kam die Nacht mit Deinem Traum
Im stillen Sternebrennen.
Und der Tag zog lächelnd an mir vorbei,
Und die wilden Rosen atmeten kaum.
Nun sehn' ich mich nach Traumesmai,
Nach Deinem Liebesoffenbaren.
Möchte an Deinem Munde brennen
Eine Traumzeit von tausend Jahren.
(Else Lasker-Schüler)

English Translation
THEN
...Then came the night with your dreams
In the silent burning stars.
And smiling day moved past me,
And wild roses breathed hardly at all.

Now I see myself after the dream of May,
After revelations of your love.
I would burn upon your mouth
In a dream of a thousand years.
(Else Lasker-Schüler)

Re: love quotes or short poems in german

How about a swissgerman song? my favorite

"ich boue mir mini träum uf rund um Dich
u male se scharlachrot a
i brönne mir di name zmitz i mis härz
und schwöre dass i ewig blibe
wänn üs nüt dezwüschet chunt..."

Translation:

I'll build my dreams up around you
and'l paint them scarlet red
I'll burn your name in to my heart
and promise to stay for ever
if nothing comes between us...

Re: love quotes or short poems in german

Dû bist mîn, ich bin dîn.
des solt dû gewis sîn.
dû bist beslozzen
in mînem herzen;
verlorn ist das sluzzelîn:
dû muost ouch immer darinne sîn
.

The most famous one, I would say... from the 12th century.

Bad English:
Your are mine, I am yours
Be sure of that
You are locked inside
my heart
Gone is the key
You have to stay for ever in there.

Re: love quotes or short poems in german

Dead thread...

One I like for the word play:

Die Liebe ist eine Heimsuchung, die zur Fremdenfindung wird.
Peter Rudl.

Heimsuchung=affliction
> made out of Heim+suchung thus home+seeking

Fremdenfindung=word creation meaning to find the unknown
> made out of Fremden+findung thus alien/stranger+finding

Heimsuchung and Fremdenfindung are compound words made out the exact opposite of each other which plays with the litteral and figurative meaning. Genious wording.

Re: love quotes or short poems in german

From Theodor Storm, light and sweet.

Nun sei mir heimlich zart und lieb;
Setz deinen Fuß auf meinen nun!
Mir sagt es: ich verließ die Welt,
Um ganz allein auf dir zu ruhn;

Und dir: o ließe mich die Welt,
Und könnt ich friedlich und allein,
Wie deines leichten Fußes jetzt,
So deines Lebens Träger sein!

..attempt at a translation:
now treat me secretly gentle and dear;
now place your foot on mine!
It tells me: I have left the world
to rest entirely on you;

and (to) you: o if the world would let me,
and I could peacefully and alone,
like of your light foot now,
be the bearer of your life!

It's quite difficult for me to translate poems as my english is not good enough.
How could the "Nun sei mir..." be translated? "now be me.."
Anyway that's the fun with translating, it makes you think more about what you actually want to say or reveals misunderstandings one may tend to overlook with texts/thoughts remaining in the mothertongue.
Let the dead be alive

doesn't fit to the subject but still:
eifersucht ist eine leidenschaft, die mit eifer sucht was leiden schaft...

Pablo Neruda

trying:

now quietly gentle and dear..[to me]

..I understand it as a monologue expressing feelings;
.."sei mir lieb" as you are dear to me

I agree that poems are not only tricky in terms of meaning, but also metrics, the length of verse. Your solution works, but you seem a litte dissatisfied.
