Re: Funniest mistake YOU have made when learning another language?

Great topic! I once overheard a Swiss saying verbatim to her boyfriend, "Can I have the money, Schatz?" I still laugh at that one years later.

Well, since you're so interested in what happened in the rest of my story, it turns out the "maus mit kein schwanze" was actually a bat, that was cold and close to death in the winter on the guys porch. Hence, the comment about the lack of tail. But seriously, why wouldn't you say the "maus hatte flügel"
Since it was so cold, the wings were probably wrapped around the poor lil' chap like a blanket. (Oh, that's how Three Blind Mice came about, too, huh? )

Hey, Chris, please explain that one.

I often mixed up Kirsche (cherries) with Kirche (church) and ended up saying I wanted to buy churches and visit a cherry.

Re: Funniest mistake YOU have made when learning another language?

Learning Spanish in bars in Madrid I was quite pleased I could order a "pincho" of tapas - basically a small portion. On taking a very innocent Columbian girl out to a Spanish bar in London I suggested we order a pincho of something or other. She was horrified - Latin American Spanish I learnt is very different from Castillian.

Pincho means to f**k.

At the same bar another time my mate got the hots for one of the Spanish bar maids. He asked me to tell her in Spanish that he thought she was a little peach, which i did. I could not understand why she burst into tears until I learnt that Peach is slang for arse - have a look at a peach next time and you'll see why.

Needless to say, he didn't get anywhere with her.

Mine was in German to my future mother-in-law. I was learning the difference between "haben" and "sein" as well as past tense. She said something to my husband like "oh, my boy- you are growing up" (in jest, as he was actually cleaning the kitchen, much to her surprise!).

So I said something like "Ja, er HAT jenden tag GEWIXT" I meant to say that he is growing a bit every day - which should have been something like "Ja, er IST jenden tag GEWACHSEN".

What I ended up telling her was something like "Yes, he j*cks-off every day" Jeez.

His mom quickly found a sponge and started cleaning the counters with extraordinary force and in complete silence. I'm of course relentlessly asking my red-faced husband "WHAT? What did I say??"!
Ok, that is the funniest thing I've read in 2 days! Thanks for making me laugh so hard! I'm learning Italian and am afraid to speak a word.. knowing I'll screw up. Reading this post makes me more afraid.

'Schatz' means 'darling' or 'sweetheart' in English, but also sounds a lot like the word 'shot'. Got it now?

I can't say that its not right. How do you make many things in German plural. So do that and then break the word up before putting it together again and check out the broken down words in Leo ;-) "Alles Klar"!
Sorry, have thought long and hard about this & am definitely one of those who doesn't have a clue and it's driving me insane ! Apart from that I haven't been able to find Leo on the site ! PLEASE tell me what I'm missing !!!! (apart from brain cells)

Leo is not a person on this site (as far as I am aware)...

...but if you were to click my link and type in Richards broken up word, you might get a little giggle!

The, ahem, "money shot" is an euphemism, uh, often times for the, uh, final thing that happens in (clears throat), um, erotic adult films. Umm. . sometimes involving a person of the female genders face.

Now, I'll go wear my dunce cap and sit in the corner to wonder about how people like ChemGoddess and Chris (and the REST of you) know about stuff like this.

(I need a smiley with a stupido cap on. And I don't mean a French one, ChemG.)

Now, Dave, that would've completely gone over my head (*wheepf!*).

Ah, well, at least none of it lands on me.

Chemgoddess,

We meant the money shot as in Basketball, but you had to lower the tone.

I have to say that I have never been quite so disgusted in my entire life.

Uhhh..... yeah, sure. Cause that would have been a funny thing for a girl to say to her boyfriend. At least the other made sense, your meaning . . not so much.

The other day, my Deutschkurs classmates and teacher were talking about music and bands.

I piped up with: "Ich liebe u-zwei!"

Re: Funniest mistake YOU have made when learning another language?

Strutted confidently into the Coop city (Bellevue) with grand plans of buying a heating pillow (Heizung kissen). Thought i did pretty well with my german until the sales lady got all blushy and tried really hard to not laugh.

Poor me, i had apparently asked for a Heizung küssen instead (a heating kiss).... i still got my pillow though
