I have heard Italians using the phrase both as "Hello" and "good bye" ...
In Italian "Ciao" is used both upon meeting and when parting. It doesn't simply mean "hi" but "bye" as well.

Interestingly enough, it is commonly repetead when parting (ciao-ciao or ciao-ciao-ciao..), but not when meeting. When Italian-speakers meet, they always say ciao just once.

Re: Ciao!Ciao!Ciao!Ciao!Ciao!Ciao!

Funny... I had also wondered before why my Italian mother-in-law says "ciao" so many times before we hang up.

But I do like the phrase "ciao ciao" for good-bye. It reminds me of "bye bye" and just seems a bit sweeter-sounding than "auf wiederhoren." (<- I 'm sure I didn't spell that right. )

Re: Ciao!Ciao!Ciao!Ciao!Ciao!Ciao!

The first ciao is "goodbye"
the second is "I said goodbye"
the third is "please let me get off the phone now"
the fourth is "you really are hacking me off now"
and the fifth is "im hanging up and don`t you dare say I hung up because i said ciao five naffing times"

Hope it helps

Re: Ciao!Ciao!Ciao!Ciao!Ciao!Ciao!

Humans can be inane and conservative with their choice of words when not engaged in deep, meaningful conversations. The amount of "you knows" and "mmmm" one overhears, is costing all phone users a fortune in wasted airtime and superfluous idle chatter, you know.......

Re: Ciao!Ciao!Ciao!Ciao!Ciao!Ciao!

I hate tallking on the phone and always end up signing off with "ciao, Tchüss, bis bald, à bientot, about half-past-five, Pal with marrowbone" or something equally inappropriate.

Re: Ciao!Ciao!Ciao!Ciao!Ciao!Ciao!

This thread, and thinking about the long farewells whenever we're with m-i-l (or talking on phone) puts this song in my head:
