Competitive language school costs?

I have been given the go ahead to join a language course at my firm. I have received a proposal for one-to-one teaching at a cost of CHF 100 an hour from a language school. They will come to my office and teach me during the day.

Does that sound competitive?

Re: Competitive language school costs?

Lucky you!

Does anyone know if this is a competitive price for one-to-one intensive language lessons?

Re: Competitive language school costs?

I don't know the rates for one-on-one teaching, but that sounds expensive compared to 400 CHF/mo for intensive and 750 CHF/3 mo for semi-intensive. (Textbooks not included). This is at Flying Teachers near ETH in Zurich.

Re: Competitive language school costs?

Lucky...ish.

Due to the total amount of the course it crosses the threshold that states I would have to pay it back in full if I left the company within two years. I dont have the intention to do that, but I dont want it to be a damocles sword either.

I would have thought one to one lessons come in around CHF 50-60. If no one has real world experience of this (and I am sure there must be here of all places) I will contact another school to get a benchmark.

I once had a quote of chf100 an hour for coming to my house fir language lessons. If someone is coming to you it takes more of their time and they incur travel costs. You might be able to find cheaper from a private tutor but It costs chf30-50 ph here for a cleaner so I'm not that surprised that specialist skills cost more.

Re: Competitive language school costs?

in Geneva the price, as I've heard, is around 60.
So to me this sounds expensive.
And even if they charge extra "travel" for coming into your place - it's no more then + 20.

I beleive in Neuchatel the cost for a private is 80CHF, but I think that's when you come to the teacher. You could PM Kamarate.

Re: Competitive language school costs?

I would say that CHF 100 is the going rate in the Zurich area and may even be a competitive price. For reference, when I taught for the Kanton of Zurich, I was paid more than this per hour for teaching in-house in various companies.

I agree witht the above, Chf 80 to 100 is normal, if you "only" pay for the contact time at those rates it is probably okay but if you need to pay for travel outside of that then it is a bit high. My wife pays Chf 100hr for English tuition. Another thought, do you need to learn it so quickly? can you wait and find someone else to share the burden at work? it depends on your basic knowledege already, but for me 1:1 lesson for an absolute beginner, are a bit wasted, better to do a night course for a few months to get the basics, then hit it hard and fast with the private lessons. Again I don't know your personal circumstances.

Re: Competitive language school costs?

That sounds about right to me. It's a little bit less where I am based, so I imagine that's right for Zurich.

Re: Competitive language school costs?

I pay 960 CHF for 40 x 90 minutes (8 weeks).

Which works out at 16 CHF per hour, but I do have to go to them and share the lessons with 9 other people.

100 chf per hour seems a bit steep...

When I looked at the cost of private lessons I found on line lessons via skype for 30-50 euros per hour. Can't remember where, but I think it was from a link on this forum so maybe try a search.

Re: Competitive language school costs?

Just to make a bit comparison. My Intensive german course, level B1, costed 20CHF per hour. And there were 6-8 people in the class. This was in Migros Klubschule.

But if all 10 of you paid 16 CHF per hour, the school got 160/hr for that 1 hour...

I would expect online via Skype would be cheaper than in person.
