I teach you Swiss German if you teach me British English

Hi there,

I'm 25 years old and I study English linguistics and literature at the University of Zürich (Master). My English is pretty good but I highly regret that I did not catch up a British English accent whilst being on my year abroad in Sheffield. I really need to practise my British English oral skills and I would be more than happy to help you with my language knowledge in German, Swiss German, Italian or Spanish.

Please write me a short message if you are interested in a language tandem learning (or if you would just like to make a new Swiss friend) and you are British English native speaker.

All the best,
Cristina

You're the first person in history to lament not picking up the Sheffield accent.

That was a close call! But I can see why you would be offering Swiss German in return rather just German...

Haha, that's really funny cheesy! I'd rather pick up a Sheffield accent than using the one we are learning at school here in Switzerland. Instead of making fun of that, why don't you just teach me? Please don't tell me that you are from Sheffo lol.

Hmmm, what is the reputation of Swiss German compared to "standard" German???

P.S. don't forget that you are addressing a Swiss Girl right now!;-)

A girl expressing a wish to practice oral skills... you have much to learn about the british language! :P

I rather like the swiss accent - a friend just came back from london and she lost her great st gallen accent and now has a mushy half swiss half london accent. Not good.

Re: I teach you Swiss German if you teach me British English

I'm from Manchester a (very long time ago) and have been told I speak very good clear English by my Swiss In Laws..... I've managed to get the hubby to correctly pronounce blimey, and whole host of 'exclamation words'

I am currently learning German in central Zurich during the day 11-2 everyday and am working through level 2, so whilst I am not at conversation level any practice is much appreciated.

I am free to meet up after my language school if you are interested ?? Send me a PM with your number ??.

Sent a PM.

Although I am not 'blessed' with a 'Sheffield' or any northern accent,
('northern' as in north of Watford) just standard Home Counties / RP...

Re: I teach you Swiss German if you teach me British English

Personally, I've always wanted to learn a nice offensive Chav-english. Just for fun, to annoy and amuse people. That and Balkan-Zuri-Swiss-German, but attempting to use that accent for fun, commonly ends up in a brawl.

So what Swiss German will you teach? Zürcher, Berner, Basler or Muotathaler?

I actually did some one-to-one "teaching" to a couple of Swissies in the Swiss Embassy in London - who were already quite proficient in English, but they wanted to learn a more natural colloquial form - which would have easily become chavvy in time, if I hadn't have moved.

I am sorry for this mistake but as at Uni we use the expression 'oral exam' vs 'written exam' I expected it to be correct also in the way I used the word! Anyway, I am happy that you, at least, never make such mistakes in German, so congrats!

Best,

it is correct. my comment was a joke about how british people will interpret things in a lewd manner. in this regard, the ":P" symbol was a clue that it was a joke and served as a double meaning for what 'oral skills' could be interpreted as
