"Both": sowohl vs beide

Hi Guys,

I'm hoping someone could clarify the difference between sowohl and beide and how they are used differently.

Is sowohl used only in instances where one says "both and" such as Ich esse beide den Apfel als auch die Birne. Whereas one uses beide with the same as in English: Ich mag beide Menschen.

Is this at all on the right track?

Google really doesn't come up with much at all.

Thanks

Re: "Both": sowohl vs beide

Mr. "Sowohl" is always seen with his associate Mr. "Als auch". You cannot separated those two. The pattern is: "Sowohl XYZ als auch ABC". Or in English "Both XYZ and ABC" or "XYZ as well as ABC". On the other hand Ms. "Beide" comes alone. You will not refer to the items separately but either as group or implicitly. Optionally you can follow a "Sowohl ... als auch ..." sentence to clarify your statement.
Example:

Q: In welchem Laden gehst du einkaufen, im Copp oder in der Migros?
A: Ich gehe in beiden (Läden) einkaufen! Sowohl im Coop als auch in der Migros.

Re: "Both": sowohl vs beide

You basically got it right , both.....and in German is "sowohl ...... als auch", and both alone, as in meaning two, e.g. both dogs were barking, in German is "beide".

But that would not be translated as "It's both in the back and in the front wrong" and in German I would say "das ist hinten wie vorne falsch" without the "sowohl"
