I think classes are a good way of starting.

Then go for the conversation groups and books etc.

I've been using Duolingo outside my German class, just to get more exercise. I don't know about other apps, but I feel like Duolingo is good if you just want to get started or get more practice. I also found it good for keeping the language fresh when you stop taking classes (so that I don't forget everything I learned...). For more systematic grammar learning a class is still more efficient.

I recommend Migros. I know it depends also on the teacher, but mine is just great
