I want to destroy my friend with.....

I wish to destroy my friend with a current language argument polite debate we are having.

I need as many examples of words that don't exist in German.

For example, there is no separate word for 'Gloves' in German like there is in English. The word for gloves in German is 'Handschuhe' which literally translates as hand-shoes.

Please can you post as many examples like the one above so I can crush the hopes and dreams of my friend.

cheers
SC

Re: I want to destroy my friend with.....

I can think of examples for the other way round. For example there is no single English word for either übermorgen or vorgestern.

Does that help?

-Diplomacy

-Friendliness

Erm, I don't know, maybe you should punch your friend to conclude the debate?

Re: I want to destroy my friend with.....

There is no German word that really means "courtesy" as the British understand it.

There is no common German word that differentiates between squid and octopus.

Are you sure, considering they are completely different species? A quick look in Leo gave me Krake and Octopus for octopus, and Tintenfisch for squid.

Actually, yes I just checked it online (after I posted - d'uh), but in its limited usage, everyone here seems to refer to them as just "schnecken" then look blank when you say it's a slug.

there's no single word for the association of subordinate officials of the head office management of the Danube steamboat electrical services, as far as I can tell.

in UK English, there is no separate word for Football - even though the Americans have one.

in these discussions, you can always use apartheid. no word for it in both German or English.

Re: I want to destroy my friend with.....

The examples so far where interessting but there was always a German word (compound words are real words).

Here is a valid example: Security and Safety.

And here 'some counter examples: Waldeinsamkeit, Putsch, Apéro, Metzgete, Znüni, Zvieri.
