Don't then

What does it mean, anyway? Is it what Swiss German magicians say?

It's "expensive" in Swiss German. Belongs to one's daily vocabulary, I'm afraid.

Maybe she meant ztüür (too expensive), the ritual incantation some bankers and business managers are reciting while rubbing their hands and walking in circles.

Just for the German learners in here (and clueless francophiles...): the actual term is "zu teuer", but as everything else in Zueri do you need to try to pronounce it the way you'd do when somebody stabs your eyes with a chili...

Ha ha. Actually, I meant "teuer". In my area, if you want to say "too expensive", it's "tssstdüüüürrrr."

This is one of those words that could be the basis of a schwiizerdütsch Laurel and Hardy skit.

out to dinner:

OH: wetsch gärn s'schnappsli?

Me: aber s'isch twoer, gau?

OH: nei!, s'isch 'tdüürr'!

Me: ja, toar?!

OH: 'tdüüürr'!

Me: klar! tooher!

OH: Nei!! s'isch 'tdüüüür! üüü, üüü, üüüürr! tdüüüürrr!

Me: glad we agree:rolleyes::)

Is he allowed to do that?
Yes, he is allowed to do that.
How shocking that he is allowed to do that.

Kudos :)
(though the text is on grammatically neutral subject, e.g. on a Mädchen or on a Hündchen)

Almost word-for-word translation to Standard German (additions in brackets):

Darf das (Mädchen) das tun?
Ja das (oder "es" als Pronomen für das Mädchen) darf das (tun).
(schockierend, überraschend, ...) Dass es das (tun) darf...

Blitzt's z' Züri au so vill wiä z' Sanggale?

That's actually four "ts" sounds in a row. Practically impossible in any other language I know (and that's quite a few).

Translation: Are there as many lightning bolts in Zurich as in St. Gallen?

Depending on the dialect (duh) something like "D' Tüür isch tüür" (that's what you were waiting for, right?), "D' Töör isch tüür" (no fun) or "D' Türe-n-isch tüür" (even less so). Oberwallis: "Z Gitschini het om Gfurna prungo."

As a B1 learner - :msncrazy::eek::msnsad:

Only in CH does the international language scale go to D2 - fluent in multiple local dialects with all grammar optional, half the words removed, the other half joined together and random spelling added.

Or maybe also for scouse.
