Grammatical rule

Hello,

There's my sentence :
I am a sixteen year old girl

Is that correct? I was wondering if there is a mistake
I am a sixteen-year-old girl ?
or I am a sixteen years old girl ?

Can you help me please

Re: Grammatical rule

"I am a sixteen-year-old girl"

You are using the nouns to form an adjective, hence the hyphenation.

Re: Grammatical rule

Nunt, as they said, sixteen-year-old is being used as one adjective for the noun "girl". But, if you just write, "I am sixteen years old", you don't use hyphens.

Another example: Mary and John bought a 100-year-old house. Their house is 100 years old.

And, keep in mind, if something is only one year old, "year" is singular and doesn't have an "s" on the end, i.e. Mary and John have a one-year-old baby girl. The baby is one year old.

Re: Grammatical rule

Exactly as the others have said.

However, if you're giving someone's age in that hyphenated format, no matter if they're one or one hundred, it's year, not years.

She is an eighty-year-old woman.
However, she is eighty years old.

I am a sixteen-year-old girl.
She is sixteen years old.

The posts in this thread seem to be repeating an already-more-than-once-explained-rule several times.

Or for those who don't like hexadecimal numbers:

16 yo

I think "I'm 16 yo" is a regional thing

You are quite welcome. Now, please, go back in your profile and fix the spelling of Lausanne because it is driving me crazy that you have put an "s" on the end of it.

You beat me to it! I wonder if people open their eyes when they arrive at a train station, stare at signs or check their address!
