UNIL Cours de Vacances

Hello,
I'm looking for a French immersion program in Lausanne, and I'm wondering if anyone has had an experience with the Cours de Vacances at the Université de Lausanne. My impression is that it's a bit pricey compared to other programs, but it seems the most intensive, which is my priority. Can anyone share their experience? I'm also interested in hearing about the summer program at the Université de Genève. Thank you!

Re: UNIL Cours de Vacances

Hello,

After "some time", I thought I'd be responsible and follow up to my own post seeing that it has accumulated a good number of views.

I did enroll in the Cours de Vacances at UNIL and it was a positive experience overall. One big advantage is the access to the facilities of the university as well as the student ID which qualifies you to discounted entries in most cultural institutions. I definitely spoke more French than I typically do, as there weren't many native speakers of English nor of my native language. If Russian is your native language, this may not be the case for you. The program is designed to be well-rounded, taking into account not only your standard grammar and vocabulary but beyond. It also requires a good amount of autonomous work, so like anything else in life, you'll get as much as you put in. With that said, I started at level B1 and didn't suddenly become fluent after just a few weeks. But because I went from speaking French almost never to daily, my confidence level and comprehension speed certainly improved drastically.

Ironically, I've decided to share this at a time when the next session won't be held on campus due to the current situation. Nonetheless, I hope this helps someone eventually.

Re: UNIL Cours de Vacances

Hey - good for you coming back and sharing with us

I have done the same eons ago at the University of Geneva and it was really worth the investments. Old school philology as I am used to, phonetics lab, ton of cultural events, total immersion. Was very happy with it.
