This site is free! I've used it and it's decent. Not a fancy technology or anything, but gets the job done. http://www.dw.com/en/learn-german/german-courses/s-2547

Hello, my wife has been using http://www.germanonlineinstitute.com/ for over a year and very happy with it.

Please, PM me if you will decide to try them out, as if they have referral credit I would love to apply this to her account. thanks and good luck.

Re: german lessons online

I used italki.com in the past and was very satisfied. But it really depends on the instructor. I can recommend the specific instructor I had who was a Chem. PhD with a Goethe Institute German Teacher Certificate.

I too have used Verbal Planet to find teachers and would recommend you trying them. I think you can find some really good people on there and schedule appointments when is convenient for you. I think it is a case of "you get what you pay for" though, with some of the cheaper teachers not being as good as the more expensive ones.

But in comparison to the price you would pay for private tuition to hear in Switzerland it's much cheaper

They also do trial lessons, sometimes for free

Re: german lessons online

I know this website doesn't have teachers or specific lessons, but it has a lot of exercise you can do online. When I was learning at Migros school one teacher introduced it to us. It's free

Good luck with your German!!

Re: german lessons online

I've had quite some fun with https://www.duolingo.com/. It's more for exercises though, and is using some gamification techniques (you get points and badges). It's quite well done. From a certain point on, there is a system where you translate real world texts and other people rate your translations etc.

What also helped me were the podcasts from Migros http://www.podclub.ch/. For some episodes, beside the episodes in Grrman you get access to the Swiss-german reading of the same episode.

Herr Professor does daily "verb juggling" which is a really useful way to learn German. They are free.

Re: german lessons online

There is lot of helpful information on this page but choosing a website & a teacher seems extremely tricky.

I have come friends who are taking German courses from Spanish/ Italian teachers where they are provided guarantee for clearing exams. Example B1 in a year. Does anyone know any websites or teachers who do so ?

Hard to guarantee success because much depends on the student's commitment. But I've always liked www.smartergerman.com. Michael Schmitz is a quirky guy but very passionate.
