Zurich Swiss German vs. Altdorf (Uri) Swiss German. Differences?

What are the differences, if any? If I learn one, is it easy to learn the other?

The Ü

vs.

Learn the dialect you will use most and can practice best in your daily life.
But, if you wish to naturalize in Uri you should speak the local dialect.

If you chose Züridütsch you still have to decide on one of the sub-dialects. But as said you should chose the local.
https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zürichdeutsch

Most of the differences are just pronunciation, but some words are very distinct and are only used in certain regions. In the course of the years you will learn and enjoy some of them from other dialects. Like Gummelistunggis.

Re: Zurich Swiss German vs. Altdorf (Uri) Swiss German. Differences?

Hi, I have visited Altdorf every year for the last 30 years and dialect, whilst quite unique, is a lot softer than it used to be. What were once quite isolated communities have become more integrated and open to outside influences due to increase in travel, mixtures of cultures and wider access to National and International media. It's still really lovely to listen to the older guys gathered round the table in the local bars talking though, and quite difficult to understand! (e.g. down the road in Fluelen at Schutzenstube or Gasthaus Linde)

Edit; the first video posted above is an excellent example, especially the guy from the farm in Urigen.

Thank you. Do you think those older guys would also know Hochdeutsch? I'm trying to gauge how far only Hochdeutsch is going to get me. If those older guys deep in the Alps in Altdorf know Hochdeutsch, it probably means Hochdeutsch is the language to focus on, at least to start with.

They will understand Hochdeutsch. It is the main written language and also spoken in the news of national television and radio. They may reply to you in "Hauchdeutsch", a Hochdeutsch with a very heavy accent.

If you do not know any German at all, than Hochdeutsch is the better starting point as you will need it any way. Next would be do unterstand the local dialect, and at somepoint start using it.

Indeed.

And if they don't, I just switch to Italian!

80% accent, 20% Hochdeutsch.
