Which is the best German language school in Basel?

Hi. I'm looking for the best German school in Basel.
I visited some: Inlingua, Migros, Academia, Berlitz, ECAP and GGG.
And I think Academia and Berlitz are good school though it's expensive.
I want to learn German intensively, like everyday lessons and a few hours a day.
This is because I want to learn German as fast as possible and need a student visa.

Do you have any recommendations or reviews of schools?
Or which school is better: Academia or Berlitz?
Thank you!

As you are in a big hurry, and require a one on one teaching course, why not advertise for a private German teacher? Most of them are on holiday right now.

Or consider crossing the border and learning with the Geothe Institut in Freiburg? It is commutable from Basel daily.

Just to check Maju - are you looking to study German in order to gain a student visa (i.e. permit)?

If so, your options are limited.

If you already have a permit to reside in Switzerland based on another qualifying factor, then the options of private tutoring or studying across the border are indeed good possibilities.

Re: Which is the best German language school in Basel?

Thank you Sbrinz, Cider Woman and Meloncollie!

I have no reside visa, but I want to live in Switzerland because I like Swiss people and the atmosphere.
And to live in a foreing country is one of my dream.
That's the reason I want to lean German in Basel and am looking for a language school where I can have a student visa.
After I learn German, I want to find a job here.
I know it is hard but I want to try.

Now I am thinking that I learn basic German at Geothe Institute in Japan and then come back to Switzerland to brush up German.
It would be helpful if you could tell me good language schools.

Thank you!

Re: Which is the best German language school in Basel?

I spent 4 months at the Goethe Institute in Freiburg in 1984, then another 6 mos at GI-Münich (started at B2 if I recall). You'll probably learn a lot more German (including the elusive conversational element) more quickly if you are in Germany, and just across the boarder. Perhaps start at home w/the intro A-level course(s) to have a basic scaffolding for building your knowledge.

The great thing about Goethe Institute courses is that they attract an international clientele - I still have the address list from my class and have recently reconnected with several classmates, we are all 33 years older and still spread across the globe (though the CH ones seemed to nest in their home cantons)

Re: Which is the best German language school in Basel?

Dear Tasebo,

Thank you so much for your advice.
I'm going to stay at my friend's place in Basel, and this is one of the reason I am looking for a school in Switzerland.
But it sounds much better that learning German in German is more efficient than learning it in Switzerland...
I do really want to go to school in Switzerland but... mmm.

Thank you very much again.

Do you know that they speak a dialect of German here

in Switzerland? The Basel dialect though is not too far

off from German. IMHO Berlitz is the best, but it costs a fortune.

I saw Berlitz is running a summer promotion, good through 30 Sept. You can take private lessons for 77 CHF per unit, plus materials. You have to take at least 10 lessons by 30 Sept. but you can take more if you want.

You must register by 31 August, and for this special the normal registration fee is waived. Might be worth checking out!

https://www.berlitz.ch/en/summer_special

Edit - a unit is 45 minutes of instruction

Re: Which is the best German language school in Basel?

Dear Bani,

Thank you for your advice!
I tried Duolingo before, but it did not suit me.
Now I'm studying watching YouTube!
Thank you again.

Dear HolidayG,

Yes, I know which language the Swiss (Basel) people speak.
And yes, Berlitz is really expensive... But it seems to be worth learning German there.
I am still wavering between Academia and Berlitz, though...

Dear 3Wishes,

Thank you very much for the information!
I checked the website and it seems nice but exceeds my budget...
Thank you so much anyway!
