Re: Looking For English Native Speaker Around Lake Geneva [English-French tandem]

Hi Rachel,

I'd like to do the exchange if you're still interested. I'm not a native speaker but close to it and lived in Canada for a few years, finished a university and did a TESOL Certificate there. I used to teach ESL in Canada.

I'll be moving to Geneva at the beginning of August and don't speak any French, but would like to learn.

Let me know if you're still interested.

Cheers,

Marz

Hi Rachel,

My background is Polish. However, I have been using English as the main language for over 10 years.
I'm arriving in Geneva at the beginning of August. Curently, I live in London, UK.
What about yourself? Is French your first language?

Cheers,

Marz

HI Marz,

Where about in Canada did you do TESOL??? Canada is my second home. I am a primary school teacher who recently graduated. I am here with my husband and I dont have work permit here so I am thinking of taking additional course meanwhile. I dont mind mind going back for short term to do TESOL certification. I have searched a few, but would like to hear from someone who had first hand experience.
And yes, it will be great to learn Canada's second official language French in turn of English. Hope the language exchange offer made here by someone works out for you.
Any insight is appreciated.
Shah.

Re: Looking For English Native Speaker Around Lake Geneva [English-French tandem]

Hi Shah,

It's nice to hear from someone from Canada. I'm from Toronto and did my TESOL certificate at York University together with my BA. I think the course was really good. It took me a year to finish it. I'm not sure if that's not too long for you. I know that colleges and private school offer TESOL too, but I don't know about their quality ( especially the ones offered by private schools). Make sure that they require you to do a minimum of 250 teaching hours, as that's what TESL Ontario requires i(f you would like to register with them and assuming that you are from Ontario).

Can't your husband's company get you a permit?
I'm supposed to get an L permit, which, I believe, should enable me to work. I'll try to find a teaching job or something else.

It would be nice to meet when I arrive.

Marz

Re: Looking For English Native Speaker Around Lake Geneva [English-French tandem]

Hi Marz,

Thank you for the valuable advise regarding TEOSL. I did my undergrad [Bachelor of Arts] from York University too. That was three years ago though. Then I did Early Childhood Education from Sheridan College, Oakville campus. And then travelled to Sydney, Australia for a year to do Masters of teaching -primary division. And this year I am with my husband in Europe. We are based in Austria, here in Zurich for short term only.
My husband too has a L permit, ofcourse making you eligible to work.
I googled about TESOL in Toronto and yes you are right, many private schools offer the course and the duration is about 150 to 200 hours in total. Many give about 50 hours of Teaching blocks. I havent made up my mind yet, but would definatly like to enrol in quality program. Meanwhile I am also in the process of getting myself register with both Ontario and Alberta Teacher's college.
Good luck in finding teaching position here in Switzerland.
Hope to meet you here someday.
Kind regards,
Shah.

Re: Looking For English Native Speaker Around Lake Geneva [English-French tandem]

Shah,

It's too bad we're not in the same city:-(
I'm not sure how long we will stay here, but I guess for at least a year, if not longer.
I was supposed to go to do my BEd in primary division ( I got into UOIT in Oshawa) but then decided that I wasn't sure if I wanted to teach kids and ended up not going.
I used to teach in a private school in Mississauga (only Saturdays thought). The school and staff were nice and if you are interested I can give you the info.

Cheers,

Marz

Re: Looking For English Native Speaker Around Lake Geneva [English-French tandem]

Hello Shah,

I was teaching English and Maths to grades 1, 3,4 and 7. It was just 3 hours but they paid quite well ($25 / hr) and the atmosphere was nice.

I will send you a private message with the name of the school and you can access it online.

M.

Re: Looking For English Native Speaker Around Lake Geneva [English-French tandem]

Hi, I am interested in learning French in exchange for English.
I'm fairly new to Geneva (January) and need to upgrade my French,
On a different note, I was reading some comments in the string about TOESL. I've thought about looking into it for the future and if I ever want to teach English overseas. Is the certification helpful and or required in many places? I've heard of people teaching in China with an undergrad degree but don't know how reliable that is. Any thoughts would be most welcome. I notice some of you are from Canada....I'm from Toronto.
