Joke translation

I am trying to translate a number of Gary Larsen, 'Far Side' jokes into French. Unfortunately, my French is very limited. In one, a dog wife is talking to the friend of her (dog) husband, and referring to a trophy (the front of a car) over the fireplace mantle she says, “Don’t listen to him George. He didn’t catch it….The stupid thing swerved to miss him and ran into a tree.”
Google translates this as, “Ne l'écoute pas George. Il ne l'a pas attrapé ... La chose stupide a fait un écart pour lui manquer et a couru dans un arbre. "
Is that correct? Especially, the phrase, “pour lei masquer” looks suspiciously wrong. Are there any native Swiss french speakers in this forum who could help me with this.

Re: Joke translation

Use deepl.com instead of google translate. Still not perfect but much better and it let you chose some variants.

For Far Side, actual text is not always important: https://imgur.com/gallery/xECam

Re: Joke translation

Well the translation is not too bad but I would rather say: Ne l'écoute pas George. Il ne l'a pas attrapé ... Le stupide chien a fait un écart pour l'éviter et a atterri dans un arbre.

Except that it is the car (the thing) than avoided George (the dog husband) and hit a tree - not George himself...

Re: Joke translation

Thanks to you all. Yes, it's a car that swerved, not a dog, so I guess, La chose stupide, is a better way to translate that part.
More interesting is the word for "swerved to miss him and ran into a tree." "a atterrri dans un arbre" or "a couru dans un arbre." or deepl's "s'est retourné pour le rater et a heurté un arbre."
I am suspicious of 'couru', which I would guess refers to someone running with his feet which is not the same as 'running into something'. Am I right?

Re: Joke translation

The first pronoun is not right and it is making it a little confusing, (to me at least). Also, atterir is used for airplane landings.

To really get the meaning across, I would say it should be, “N’écoutes pas à mon mari, George. Il ne l’a pas attrapé. La voiture stupide à fait un écart pour lui éviter et a heurté un arbre.”

Also, I seem to remember from French grammar class that a sequence should be in imparfait, so the last sentence would be "la voiture stupide faisait un écart pour lui éviter et heurtait un arbre." But I'm not sure.
