Re: Best Intensive German Course

I think, all school are the same because they have almost same books (course material) to refer to.. it all depends how good and patient your teacher is.

Re: Best Intensive German Course

Thanks for the reply. I suppose that's true, do you know of any schools that have a particularly good reputation?

Re: Best Intensive German Course

Dan, 'best course' is an almost meaningless label, as we each learn differently, we all have different goals. One man's ceiling is another man's floor, and all that.

Even with the same course materials the approach an individual teacher takes makes a difference - what inspires and motivates one student could leave another tearing his hair out.

Many schools allow a trial lesson - why not take full advantage of that, visit several schools to see if one seems a better fit for you than another? Given that some schools lock you into rather expensive contracts*, attending several trial lessons is simply due diligence.

Towards that end, perhaps if you give us a (prioritized) list of the things you are looking for in a course we could make more targeted suggestions.

Good luck, hope you find the right course for you.

*First German lesson: Read the AGBs carefully before signing on the dotted line.

Honestly, I think the best school is the nearest/most convenient school, as you're more likely to attend.

Re: Best Intensive German Course

I have a native German speaker teacher from Berlin and we do the courses on Skype. I pay around CHF20 per hour and he is GREAT. I think even in the cheapest classroom you would pay much more and it is not efficient like 1-1 lessons.

From Dietikon, you‘ve got Migros Klubschule next to Altstetten station. I got through German B1 with them.

I went here a couple years ago, it was not intensive, but a few nights a week. It was okay, you will get out of it what you put into it, good variety of different nationalities as well.

I am considering going to Alpha Sprachwelt in Zurich/Stadellhofen later this year to complete B1 level. They have an intensive course schedule and appears to be highly rated. The school is one train stop after Zurich main station if your coming from Dietikon.

Good Luck

Re: Best Intensive German Course

EB-Zurich also has some courses next to Bahnhof Altstetten. However, they don't always decide the location very far in advance.

In addition to typical A1-C2 sequence courses, they also offer a few supplemental courses for specific fields - nursing, housekeeping, etc. I don't think I've seen such supplemental courses elsewhere.

I went to a German school and learnt German in 3 months. It was a 6-month course but I finished it early. It's called Alégra. I think it's kinda expensive but I totally recommend it if you need to learn German fast.

Cool. How many hours a week did you do, and what exam did you pass?

Its limiting to just say Dietikon. Better to look in Zürich. I did intensive at Benedikt. Was good but stay away from any offer with this " speaking laboratory" ( Sprachlabor )

I did appro. 6 hours a day I think? not sure but it was a full time school. No school on Sat and Sun. I did have tests after every chapter and the marks were summed up in the end. I think I had to have an average above a 4.
