how to end a zoom call

I'm rubbish at ending calls - even with normal phone calls. When skype came along, I hated looking at myself on the call (much prefer without the video) and now with covid we have all have to use zoom and other video chats with multiple people. How do you end the call politely?

I heard "well let me let you go" yesterday, which i thought was pretty good. I know someone who just walks away - gets a coffee, never returns (i wish i could do that, but would be too mortified)

Re: how to end a zoom call

Never tried zoom, but with skype or teams I leave the video off anyway (my camera is covered in any case).

Just be honest - lovely to talk to you but I need to get on with my day. Or "I'd better let you go, catch up again soon?"

Indeed. I personally don't think I've ever announced to anyone mid convo or end that i needed to change my tampon.

Just say you're sorry you have to leave the chat because you have to go/do something else, but you're glad you could have this talk etc. End it with some positive feedback and a smile and you'll be forgiven.

Now, if it's family on the other hand....
I noticed at one point or another they too get tired!

Re: how to end a zoom call

For zoom - record a video of yourself attentively listening, and occasionally nodding/agreeing.

Set this video as your background, then close your webcam cover.

Walk away.

Also works for particularly long conference calls which could easily have been replaced by a 2 line email...

Just like a phone call, "It was great talking to you (catching up, going over this project), thanks for your time, I have to get going, bye".

I can't stand a meeting that lasts more than 15-20 minutes.

Useless waste of time, I have better things to do.

This is one I just can't stand. I think it can come across as patronising when someone decides about another's time. Why would anyone be permitting another to leave, and deciding when it's going to happen? If they want to go, they're free to do so. If I want to go, I must take responsibility for that.

Possible exceptions, I suppose, could be if the speaker knows that they've unreasonably been taking up way too much of the other person's time, and is trying to half-apologise, or else if the speaker is of considerably higher rank, in which case the "let you go" is perhaps a more friendly-sounding way to say "you're dismissed, you may leave now".

Yes, to be used if it is true. Never risk the "lovely to talk to you" if it wasn't, lest the person start to call you more often. Ditto for lovely to catch up with you, great talking to you, sorry you have to leave the chat because of something else, thanks for this call, etc. Say what is true.

In fact, it can be handy to have a small repertoire of phrases ready, which are always true, and polite, for example: "I need to go," or "I think I've jotted down the main points," and "I must stop here, and turn my attention to another project/report, etc." or "I need to prepare for another appointment.".
I think it's British idiom - it's not taken as either dismissive or patronising. Don't forget facial expression/body lang.

Iím not sure I understand you. If you are the host, you thank people for participating, wish them well and pull the plug. If not you wait for the host to end the call.....

What am I missing?

just never set up a meeting without a list of points that need to be talked about.

If there is no list, I cancel the meeting.
