'I'm looking forward to...' in French?

Hi all francophones

I was standing at the hob tonight, absently stirring some sauce whilst planning French sentences in my head for tomorrow's carefully staged conversations, which is what I do to pretend to be able to make casual spontaneous chit-chat with the other school mums, and I got stuck.

How would I express the idea of 'I am looking forward to... <the picnic, the weekend, whatever>.' Is it one of those weird untranslatable things that would never occur to someone, like 'Je me demande...' (Lit: I ask myself) for 'I wonder...'

Anyone know how to say 'I am looking forward to...', please?

Looking forward to your answers!

Many thanks.

Re: 'I'm looking forward to...' in French?

Hmmm good one. I would say: "Ce serait un plaisir de XXX" French is my third language, native speakers might say something else. I'm curious about other responses. Mine is not a literal translation, but tries to convey a similar idea.

Re: 'I'm looking forward to...' in French?

Google translates "I am looking forward to meeting you" as "Je me réjouis de vous rencontrer", which does not sound too far off to my uneducated ear.

WordReference.com often gives good translations, but the best it can come up with for "looking forward to" is "attendre avec impatience", which does not sound at all right.

Hmm ... not quite so simple. For fun I then tried "Looking forward to your answers" which Google returned as "Dans l'attente de vos réponses", while the minimally modified "I am looking forward to your answers" gives "Je me réjouis de vos réponses" (sounds off note to me, but who am I to judge?).

Google is certainly no authority on language (its German to English translations are often close to useless), but it seems that the translation of that phrase may well depend on the context in which it is used.

Re: 'I'm looking forward to...' in French?

How about "I cant wait for..."?

J'ai hâte que... "J'ai hâte que le week-end arrive."
J'ai hâte de... "J'ai hâte de partir en pique-nique ce weekend."

J'ai hâte d'aller me coucher.

Re: 'I'm looking forward to...' in French?

'Je me réjouis' is correct. 'Dans l'attente de..' is used to close formal correspondence.

Re: 'I'm looking forward to...' in French?

I am a native French speaker, and indeed they are all three correct (accents missing):
"J'ai hate..."
"Je me rejouis..."
"Dans l'attente de...", with the last one only for formal writing.

My 2 cents: "Je me rejouis..." is less popular in conversation in France and Belgium than Switzerland.

Re: 'I'm looking forward to...' in French?

I correspond by email with a French girl and she always says...
J'attends avec impatience de tes nouvelles. Which I guess means I'm looking forward to your news. So perhaps J'attends avec impatience de te rencontrer? Would that be right?

Re: 'I'm looking forward to...' in French?

I posted the same query on another language board I hang around on, and after some debate, consensus seemed to be as follows:

"..J'ai hâte de +infinitive
J'ai hâte que + subjonctive
Vivement que + subjonctive

The easiest way is to use 'vivement + noun' then you can't go wrong..."

Obviously I'm not going to use the subjunctive, as I'm at least 10 chapters in my book off that, so I've settled on 'J'ai hâte de +infinitive' for the equivalent of the English 'I'm looking forward to...' and ''vivement + noun' for a more casual, to my ear American-style phrasing along the lines of 'Roll on the ... <weekend, picnic, etc>'.

Thanks for the debate, everyone - now I won't need to bother my French tutor with this on Thursday.

I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who has to stage their casual chit-chat conversations! You're not alone.

Here's a site I use to refer to, also with a forum. Maybe you could post yours if it's a different one The more sources to this stuff, the better

Rusty, I would groan at you but you did answer my question, so I'll thank you instead! So it makes a statement and vivement here means "can't wait for" or "bring on ..."

Mine's more of a general 'gosh, aren't languages interesting/let's talk about the best ways to study them' sort of forum - it's a discussion board on the UK Motley Fool site, only set up a couple of weeks ago:

http://boards.fool.co.uk/Messages.as...8139&bid=51679

I used it this time for a translation request because I know there's at least one fluent French speaker who posts there, and lots of enthusiastic hobbyists!

Re: 'I'm looking forward to...' in French?

@ Sada. Well as they say I'm only a blow-in on this site, so I have to take help in any shape I get, beggers can't be choosers!

Cheers for that website link, it's nice to find other people who are inthusiastic about languages. I'm doing a degree that covers learning two foreign languages at the mo and I'm hard pressed to find much enthusiasm in these parts

I was enjoying just reading the posts here in the language corner before going to college this morning... sad or what!

Will have a look at that site later.

- Vivement dimanche!!
(+/- can't wait until sunday or something in that direction, engl. isn't my mother language, sorry )

- Vivement les prochaines vacances!
(can't wait for the next holiday to come).

BUT: here we use also the construction:
vivement + que +subjonctive
Eg.: Vivement qu'il parte! (can't wait until he's gone)
Vivement que tu reviennes chez nous!

I hope this didn't bring more confusion though - yes french is a complex language but interesting....don't give up!

Cheers FMX. Nah, I won't be giving up. I like French, it's certainly not easy but I do like it. And it is certainly easier when you have people coming back with answers like this to help you on the way.
